720P/24P variable frame rates

Feeling kinda stupid here, but just making sure. If I shoot say 36 fps in 720p/24p, I've got to import that into my NLE and use the pulldown in order to see the slow motion effect right? I play it back on the HVX and it looks like normal speed.

But, I could use 24PN and see the effect play back on the LCD immediately right? I've done it in the past, just can't remember how I did it.

(Leafing madly through Barry's book now)

cheers,

JP

Is there a quality loss at all between shooting in say 60fps over 30p and then converting to slow mo in final cut with the frame rate converter, and shooting in 60fps over 30pn? With the former you get audio along with the slowmo, so I usually shoot this way.

wait you can do the variable framerates in the "over 60P" mode tooo?!?!? SWEET. makes going out to DVCprohd tapes easier.....

There's no quality difference if you strip out the duplicate frames (using the Apple Frame Rate Converter) or if you shoot in pN. pN mode is just doing that extra step for you in-camera, but you can do it in post as well.

Seems odd that you can shoot in 60p and record audio, but if you shoot 30p/60fps you get no audio. Seems like it would have been a minor thing to include audio on the pn frame rates.

And what would that audio sound like? Shoot 30pN at 60fps, and your footage would play back at half speed. Do you want the audio to play back at half speed? There's no easy answer, so they just ditched it.

Yea, if Im shooting slow motion I want the audio to play back at half speed. I think the majority of people would.:)

You can get that. Shoot in the 60fps mode, and change the timebase in post. That way you'll have your audio and your slow-mo. You can have it both ways.

Okay, I'm going to hijack my own thread. Barry, any noticeable slow down of transfering said variable frame footage using p2 genie into a PC laptop?

I recorded about 5-6 min of 720pn footage, using a FW400 cable into a G-tech drive. Took about 40 minutes. Didn't expect it to take that long.

Any thoughts?

While I have never used P2 Genie, I have never found that it took longer than about a minute a GB from a P2 card.

Best,

Jan

Thanks Jan!

Hmm, wonder if my laptop is slowing P2 Genie down, it's got a lot of crap on it. I'll ask the P2 Genie guys.

cheers,

JP

I shot some stuff in 720p/24p @ 60fps, but I don't know how to get it to appear as slow mo. (Usually I shoot in 720p/24pn for 24p timeline)
I'm trying to use that footage in a 60i timeline eventually. How so I use the frame converter to make it show up at slow mo? I'm using FCP6.

Use FRC to make it 23.98 I believe.
Thanks that worked, but one thing I found out was that you gave to select the clip in the browser part of FCP not in the timeline. FRC won't work via timeline. That was my main problem.

Yeah, the FRC instructions actually mention to select from the "Browser" specifically, but I still had that same problem when I first tried using it.

I felt dumb after taking a more than a day to figure that out.
