720 vs 1080p?

I'm sure this has been answered before but I just searched and was not able to find anything.

I film mostly sports and live music events, and have always been filming 720 simply because my computer could not edit 1080. What is the pros/cons of filming 1080 over 720? My final output is always web or SD dvd. Thanks in advance,

First I want to admit to my bias, I don't like working with interlaced video. With freeze frames and slow motion, having only every other scan line in a field, screws up the quality of the end result.

Thus, in 1080 mode, you can go up to 1080/30p or if shooting a movie, 1080/24p. In the case of something that might be transferred to movie film, 1080/24p makes the most sense. It offers the highest resolution.

However, given a choice of all the video modes, there's a lot to be said for shooting 720/60p. (There is no 1080/60p.) Thus the higher frame rate makes for great freeze frames and great slow motion videos. For fast action, like sports, this is ideal.

Not everything is fast action, so talking heads with limited action might be best in 1080/30p. That gives us a higher resolution.

As Berry had pointed out, SD or WEB is a much lower resolution so, any difference between 1080p and 720p will not be seen.

There is a totaly different look between 24p and anything else like 60p or 30p or interlaced. If you like the film look 24p is the way to go. I won't shoot anything but 24p without kicking, and screaming, or if the client wants it sure ok no problem.

i shoot almost exclusively for SD or online delivery and almost always shoot 1080_30p.

there are 2 main advantages over 720p:
1. more room to rescale/frame the shot within the smaller SD project dimensions
2. color and sharpness are slightly (noticeable to me) better in 1080p
