720 PN or 1080p 25 ?

I read that it's better to use 720 PN than 1080p 25 since that, given the size of the CCD chips in the camera, 1080p 25 is just an up-conversion of 720 and that that up-conversion could probably be done better by some other software if ever you wanted to up-convert to 1080.

You also save twice as much space using 720 PN but I'm first and foremost concerned by the quality of the image. Would the HVX 720 p converted to 1080 by software be better/the same/worse than direct 1080 in the the camera?

Wrong.

The HVX200/a is a 1080p camcorder.

IT holds 20% more resolution in 1080p. ITs sharper, cleaner, and is far less compressed than 720p. Period.

That right there is a textbook example of what we call "a load of crap."

Have you actually shot footage with the cam with these two settings and compare the quality and fidelity of the footage?

Because what you've "heard" can easily be squared with what you've experienced

I have only just recently gotten the camera (just in time to do my first feature) so I was in a real hurry as to which settings to choose. You will all be happy to know that my DP advised me to use 1080 p25. And so I did.
And Barry, that "load of crap" didn't come from me. It would however seem to make sense to someone who doesn't know the camera (like me a few weeks ago).

Oh, I know, it's what you were told. People do seem to cling to that notion, but the facts contradict it, and I apologize if my patience level (of having to explain the exact same thing again three years running) has dropped to the point where I now just call the argument a "load of crap." :)
