720 over 1080

Hiya Gurus,

I'm hoping someone on this forum can extole the virtues of shooting 720p instead of 1080 on the 7D. I only have to deliver on SD and to my eye 720 looks more filmic...or am I tripping?

For a filmic look? The 7D's 720p has no advantages over its 1080 for that. 1080 is sharper, with much less aliasing complications, and at 23.976fps it's the right "24p" film speed. 720p on the 7D is very low-res with severe aliasing complications, and you'd have to re-time everything in post to get a 24p simulation out of it.

If all you want is slow-mo, the 7D's 720/60p can make for that, but for regular mainstream shooting, the 1080 is just better.

Sorry to jack your thread, but I have a somewhat related question. since 60p is only available in 720p, when you want to shoot slo-mo for a 24p timeline, is this this workflow:

shoot slo-mo parts in 720p, 60p
shoot everything else in 1080p, 24p

make your sequence 720p, 24p

bring in your 720p 60p footage, slow it down (what is the correct speed to slow it down to for frame-for-frame accuracy, btw?)

bring in your 1080p, then shrink it to 720 p

export as 720p. does that all make sense?

A bit more simple is open any 60p shot in Cinema Tools and Conform to 23.98. Then it will play in slow motion in FCP without any further dickering...

Thanks Barry! But I guess there is no way of getting proper slo-mo in 1080p with the 7D, is there? Short of blowing up the 720p footage to 1080p, that is
