C100: 70-200mm F/2.8 IS original version (not version II) with C100

I've decided to buy a 70 - 200 F2.8 lens. I want it to have image stabilization for handheld football work. I can get the original version of the Canon F2.8 with IS for about $1,000 used. And the version II, which I know is the one that everyone raves about, I can get used for about $1,600.

Do you all know if there's much of a difference b/t the original and the version II when used with the C100? Does the original talk just fine (electronics) with modern cameras? Is the IS as good or almost as good as the version II? I know that the version II is a bit sharper, but is it even noticeable at 1080p?

I'm not against the Sigma or Tamron. But everything always comes back to buying the Canon if you can. And the price of the original IS model puts it in line with the Sigma and Tamron.

Thanks!

The version 1 is a great lens, but really if I had the budget the v2 is a better investment, lenses are worth investing in you'll probably be still using it on an 8K C900 in 2025.

The v2 will give the image a 3D ''POP'' much like high-end cine lenses do on the c100, and much better stabilization.

So if budget can't stretch the v1 is still a mighty 70-200mm 2.8 IS, you won't be disappointed, this is just better and worth it if the budget is there.

For either video or stills I would go with the mk II, it's worth the extra coin. Owned both and my mk I became a paper weight until finally selling it off..

I had reviewed both these lenses some time back. I had used the IS version one during my still photography days and the following review contains those impressions http://www.indiawilds.com/diary/canon-ef-70-200-f2-8-l-is-usm/

The 70-200 f2.8 L IS II is great lens. I regularly use for filming and photography. http://www.indiawilds.com/diary/canon-70-200-f2-8-l-is-ii-usm-review/

I would strongly suggest that you buy the IS II lens given that the price difference is not much and the quality is a lot better. The IS is also a lot better. Cry and Buy once, be happy for a long long time. :)

Awesome consensus! Thanks so much! I will definitely go with version II. It's only a $300 - $400 difference b/t used and new, so I think I might just get a shiny new toy this week.

Do you look at canonpricewatch.com? they track sales, plus they also have their "street price" program. I haven't used it, but many folks have and are quite happy. Most recent price on a new Canon 70-200 2.8 II is $1,799, if you scroll down a bit:

Camera Canada also has it at $2,200 CDN. With teh current exchgange rate, oolgle says taht is about $1,668. Shipping woul dprobably be about $40 based on my previous experience:

In the past, Canon used to have a "joint" USA and Canada warranty. The latest discussion has backed off on saying they will service it in either country. You will have to research that part yourself, but I have been completely comfortable buying from an authorized dealer in Canada.

I love the Canon 24-70 2.8 II and 70-200 2.8 II, tehy are both great zooms. I have a Nikon D750 & D5300 right now for stills, plus 2 Panasonic with native Panasonic lenses for 4K video. I still can't bring myself to sell my Canon lens kit ....

Good luck!
M.
