C100: 70-200 f 2.8 lens support c100 & c100mk2

I don't know if there are any differences in the mount on a 100 vs. a 300, but I don't know anyone using a support on the 70-200/2.8 on a C300, myself included.

Most of the C300 MKII users I have seen in LA ARE using a lens support with the 70-200 2.8. I was on a shoot late last year with six other crews at one big event, everyone using that lens had a lens support. I agree, with operating, probably not needed. Once again, it's not the operating, it's the transporting your camera around a shoot. Run, slip, trip or stumble and subject that lens to the right G-forces and you could rip the mount off of the camera or at least crack or damage the camera body where it surrounds the mount. Not mention throw off your back focus. Cheap insurance.

Yes, I could see running around with it and it "bouncing around" exerting extraneous forces on the mount, but I pretty much only use it during sit-downs on sticks.

Particularly with the 100-400, I find a lens support also offers a bit more stability for your shots. If I'm filming a seminar type shoot at 300-400mm, sometimes I'll put a lens support on as touching the lens or camera (to focus, zoom, pan, tilt, etc.) will cause more movement/vibration in the lens if it doesn't have additional support. Sure, I can turn IS on and that will often handle that issue, but typically if I have a good tripod on solid ground I prefer to leave IS off.

It's the same case with the 70-200, but to a lesser extent, such that I don't use a lens support for it often, but I do on occasion. Here is one setup where I used Manfrotto plates for lens support. Since then I bought various Zacuto and Wooden Camera baseplates and lens supports, which I primarily use with my cinema zoom lens, but sometimes bring to use with the telephoto lenses.

In this situation, I carry the C100 w/70-200 upright by the body. Vulture holds the weight and my right hand holds the lens. Did this on a shoot at Red Rocks a few days ago. Up & down the stairs all day long in the snow...
