Im really confused I know own both most of my 5 footage has blown me away, the 7d has not
So which to use ?
Here is a test image
www.halfinchrails.com/hir/pics/7dgrabs/tone.jpg (160ISO)
IMO after carefully listining to barry, IMO they are both soft in terms of LPI
So how does one deal with soft footage ?
Well I have been sharpening the footage then adding film grain in FCP - this masks softness giving a more pleasant failure of resolution
Some thoughts..
25p is obviously a boon
Noise
I think the 7d is noisier so falls down on grading - and grading is a must to mask the soft footage
Aquiring focus
The DSLR lenses are extremely sensitive, there is something that makes aquisition of focus easier with the 5
no decent moitoring solution exists AFIAK
70-200
Is a common lens, reach is great with the 7d, DOF is amazing on the 5
Shooting open
Lenses are not good open, one can stop down a little with the 5
Breaking the codec
This is something I have not been able to test..
My theory is that simpler images reproduce better due to less information per frame, the 5d and simplify images with less DOF
My conclusion - confusion
My feeling that the 5d one will have a simpler image that is a little free-er of noise more gradable and more likely in focus and simpler less codec breaking
All of these minor issues add up to a magic ticket that just looks better to the typical viwer
720 and internet compression equalises them both
For complex wide images one should use the EX1 if you have one
I really dont know, I want the 7d to win because I can get easy PAL and flog the 5 keeping some cash - but feel it does not
