$7 guerilla field monitor sunshade

you'll hear questions here every now and then about where to get a sunshade for xyz monitor. i have used a couple of those nylon over cardboard wrap-around retail shades over the years and never really cared for any of them.

so i had an idea:

1 sheet of black coroplast
2 feet of industrial velcro
ruller and utility knife
30 minutes

weighs practically NOTHING and its surprisingly very sturdy!

note the hole in the top to allow flip mounting for use with 35mm adapters

only drawback is that you will have to attach velcro around the perimeter of your monitor (i suggest the fuzzy side so it wont cling to the foam in your case)

Where can we buy Coroplast from? Are there any good sources on-line for such a tiny quantity as we would need for this?

Thanks for the work, looks really nice.

yeah david, my first thought was i can make and sell these in bulk. kinda like the fellow that makes that foam firewire-saver thing (sinarch, i believe?) but this thing is SOOO simple that there is absolutely ZERO difficulty or complexity to it. still i guess, if enough people wanted them it might make sense.

and dan - coroplast is pretty common, you can buy it at any larger art supply/hobby store by the single sheet. probably near the poster/matte board section. sign shops might even sell it by the piece. i bought my 20x30 piece for around $5.

i may be helping work IKAN's booth at the next vegas NAB, maybe ill make up a few dozen or so and sell them for blackjack money ; )

This is how lots of little film product companies get started. If you make a good product cheap enough and make it so that lazy schmucks like us will pay you to make it because we are either too busy or lazy, you can make some serious scratch. ;-)

ok, good points. another guy just came into the studio tonight and said the same thing.

hypothetically, what would you guys pay for a pre made, ready to roll item like this? $12, $15, $20 maybe. the nearest competing product i can find is $35 and its pretty sloppy and rather bulky...

i'm looking into some more durable material like PVC and considering building the side panels such that you can choose between square and fixed top angle. and a 4th bottom panel to full close the perimeter...

I would pay $20.00 but if it's higher, I would buy a Hoodman. I have one for my HVX and it's pretty good.

Yes, you sound like the itinerate tinkerer, you should go for it and add some more products. I think Luis seems to be doing pretty good with his new Carrion monitor. Find the niches that none of the big guys are addressing and you will do okay.

Rock on!

any more than $20 would be ludicrous for this (what am i, zacuto or something? - HA!).
and even at that point i may have to include free ground shipping ; )

i have a design for an onboard monitor shade as well - maybe $27 for both?

- thanks!

All you need do now is to make all the pieces attach (for added support), but be adjustable for different size monitors. Find a way to make it attach to the LCD without adding velcro to the actual monitor itself (either a small static clamp or an adjustable clamp) and I think you'll have something very versitle and worth having!
