I was thinking of getting a battery grip to obviously double my batery time but also to use the AA battery insert.

how well does this work

will be camping several days and thought this the easiest way for prolonged battery life

any comments - especially - what is the cheapest way to get a battery grip in Los angeles? today is Friday - leaving next thursday.

thanks

I bought a cheap battery grip out of ebay and also generic battery's. (for the price you can buy a few)
All is working well.

Zeikos makes a battery grip for the 7D that you can pick up on Amazon for about $50, a third the price of the Canon model. It works great and does everything you want the battery grip to do.

A few compromises, though:
  • It is made out of cheaper materials. It won't break in your hands, but the battery door is a little flimsy, made from cheap plastic. Just be careful with it.
  • It will NOT work wit the Canon DR-E6 or ACK-E6 AC/DC power adapter. The cable that connects to the false battery you would normally insert into the camera has nowhere to be fed out of the battery door. To give you an example of how this work in general, without the battery grip, look at the battery door on your 7D. There is a little rubber stopper next to the battery door. If you use the Canon DR-E6/ACK-E6, the power cord running from the false battery will be forced through the gap the rubber stopper is, well, stopping. This maintains the weather seal and gives the cable a nice firm hug. On the Zeikos battery grip, there is no such place for this cable to be routed, so you cannot close the battery grip door, which means the battery grip, and thus the camera, will not turn on.
  • The grip on the Zeikos is not as high quality as the Canon battery grip. For the price range, though, it's still decent.

Other than that, it is a GREAT third-party item for still photography, where a battery grip is a nonnegotiable must-have, and it's nice for video when you want to limit your battery changes while shooting, want to give some height to your camera, or if there is not a place for the battery door on the 7D to drop out in order to change out batteries (something not all rigs or setups will allow).

I have the Zeikos...it quite good for the price. I also have generic LP-E6 batteries but I bought mine through this website:

www.mg1concepts.com

not through e-bay. They have high quality ones not like those cheap e-bay ones. I had too many go dead (e-bay batteries) on me during a shoot and I was screwed. I was so pissed...lucky I had some orginal and these to get by.
