64gb P2?

When are the 64GB Cards expected to be out and what would be the estimated price? Would the 16 and 32 price drop and the 64 take the place of the 32?

Nobody can say for sure, but the guess is that the 64 will be out sometime around the middle of 2008. No clue as to prices; historically they've only offered two sizes of cards at any one time so the guess would be that the 16 would be discontinued when the 64 comes out.

But would the 16 really need to be discontinued?

I mean, 4gb was pretty limiting and worth moving away from ... but I can see a lot of news outfits (for example) being quite happy with the capacity of 16GB cards .. and the ability to buy more 16's cheaper would maybe be more appealing over fewer larger cards.

Thoughts?

If I were a betting man, I'd bet Q3 2008. Panasonic's not known for getting P2 cards to market before their estimated release, and as far as I know, there is no estimated release date yet. Here's the history timeline:
early 2005: 4GB cards
2006 : 8GB cards
mid 2007: 16GB cards
12/2007: 32GB cards

Working in their favor is the fact that the hardware controller IC can stay the same. Working against them is the sky-high price of 16GB SDHC, with the class 6 media wholesale cost well above $100/unit, which would put a big dent in the margins that Panasonic is used to working with. We'll start to see 32GB SDHC cards by February, that will drive down the 16GB cost, but not until well into 2008.

i think were nearing the point where card capacity wont effect workflow as much - not on a revolutionary basis at least...

4 to 8 HUGE, 8 to 16, also REMARKABLE. 16 to 32 NOTICEABLE. beyond that it gets to a point where joe-videographer who can afford to enter the p2 game may not need that much more storage until it becomes significantly cheaper. or changes fundamentally from a workflow standpoint...

hell, for what i do, 2 8gigs cards never let me down. i just bought 2 16's for added headroom. i really have no interest in 32 or 64 cards

just my thoughts...

The great thing about the 64GB (and 128GB) will be, is I can stick them in a HPX3000 and not have to switch out cards all day. 64GB at 1080/24p, with 5 slots; 400 (800 with 128GB) minutes, in AVCIntra 100, of non-stop record time. And people can't bash P2 for having lower record times than tape.... or harddrives. The only thing would be archiving.

That's what I mean I hope panasonic will continue producing 16gb card so that it will stay available.
Anybode can confirm that ???????

Why should they still offer 16Gb cards, when they want to sell their new bigger cards?
Limiting the choice to only two, makes revenue planning for Pana much easier...
A lot of 8Gb owners will finally take the plunge and buy new cards, since the 32Gb cards will come down in price then.
And Pana marketing can focus on P2 finally meeting tape recording times.
Only reason to keep the 16ers would be if the interior SD cards would become so cheap that the profit would still increase besides lowered MSRP... But we´ll see...

Shoot.. I got to use some 8 gig cards the other week and felt like I was floating along.. dreaming almost.. ahhhh. I've been so used to dealing with the 4 gigers that when I move up to the 32s I'm so loving life. To be able to shoot a 2 hour concert without switching a single card: PRICELESS...

The 64GB P2 cards are being manufactured already and are working flawless.

Everything else is a matter of marketing strategy. They come out in summer, maybe autumn.

I guess Panasonic wants to keep the price high for the 32GB cards.

I also wish they would sell cheap 16GB cards, but I suppose manufacturing 64GB cards doesn´t cost that much more and can be sold with more profit.

I want cheap 32 GB cards from Fuji. When do Fuji cards come out?

I dont know if they are being mass produced yet, I just know they already exist.

No, I can´t reveal the origin of the information, nor can I confirm or deny the existence of a source. I hope you understand. Call it mystical foresight.

its an assembly line thing, they will convert the 16gb lines to make the 64, as they did the 4 to make the 16 and the 2 to make the 8, two lines, means more of the pricier cards, means more money for less pay out for panny, in order to keep the 16 line, they would have to have 3 lines, which means rather than a quick convert, they have to make new space, more robots more employees. which means higher prices for all, cause they aren't going to drop the profit margin so we can pay less for an older model.

or maybe a non-disclosure agreement? ;)

Regardless of size, there must always be an entry-level-priced card. Although Panasonic has had a monopoly on this type of technology, Sony's new camera and other companies making P2 cards will push the prices back down. If I had to guess, I'd think that the smallest of the available cards by Panasonic will always be around $1000.

Not always, up until the 8GB was discontinued it was going for $550.

Sony's introduction has no effect on Panasonic pricing because Sony priced their cards exactly the same as Panasonic.
