60p to 24p?

Didn't really see a sub-forum to put this in, so....

I'm looking at shooting with the Sony CX520V, which seems to only shoot 1080/60p. How can I convert this to 24p? Should I convert 60p to 60i and use Magic Bullet Frames or is there another option that'll give better results?

I got good results on some DVX footage that was accidentally shot 30p, by bumping it up to 60i using Twixtor, and then using nattress conversions to change it to 24p.

No consumer Sony AVCHD camcorder shoots progressive, let alone 60p.

How can I convert this to 24p?
Unless you want to remove frames manually, one by one, you either drop your footage into 24p timeline, or you export into 24p. The result will not look as good as native 24p.

What do you think if I dropped the frame rate from 60p to 48P, then convert to 24PsF (technically 48i) and then to 24p. Is that at all remotely possible?
I don't know how PsF came into picture, because your camera has 60 distinct fields per second. You can deinterlace 60i to 60p, then slow down to 48p, then drop every other frame to get 24p. You will lose vertical resolution and the motion will be slower. Will look OK for nature shots, but will not work if you want to sync it with sound, especially with someone talking.

If you wanted 24p you should have bought a camcorder that offered this mode.

My mistake, I just double checked the features and it is 60i, but has 60p playback abilities. The reason we're using this camera is because it has Nightshot... no 24p models have it, and we absolutely need it. So then it's just a simple 60i to 24p conversion, which we can use DV FilmMaker or Magic Bullet Frames for.

I see. Crap, I did it again. Should have asked first. Now I see you had a specific reason to use a Sony camera. I apologize for being rude.

Yep.

Hi Batutta - I'm experiencing the same issue - 30p that was supposed to be 24p. Could you expand on any of these details? I haven't you any of these programs but I'm getting them now - Twixtor and Nattress. Any other workaround or details. Any help is huge. Thanks!

Well this was ages ago so I don't remember the exact settings and workflow I used. I believe I edited first using the 30p footage, then used twixtor to render only the shots I used from 30p to 60i. Output those shots, brought them into the 24p timeline, and then used nattress standards conversion to convert the 60i footage to 24p. Standards conversion is cumbersome because you have to apply the filter, then go into the filter, and then drop your clip back into the image well.

Very helpful - were you pleased with the results? Also, did you kept the audio untouched - just render the video - was sync an issue or was it just b-roll?

It's indistinguishable from the other 24p footage to my eyes, but the problem scene didn't have a ton of fast movement in it, which probably helped. I had no sync issues at all, left the audio untouched.

Just as a heads up -- there's no reliable to way to convert 30p to 24p. You can get away with it if there's little movement (as Battuta's was), but if there's anything more than slight movement, it's just not going to look good. There simply aren't enough motion samples to do it.

It was more than slight movement, it just wasn't a fast action scene. I'd say even a moderate amount of movement can look perfect with the method I used. Twixtor renders new in-between frames and creates those extra motion samples, but it can have issues with certain kinds of scenes, requiring a lot of tweaking.
