60i vs. 24F

This has probably been asked before, but even after reading a myriad of reviews and searching through the forums, I haven't found a definitive answer.

I know that 24F degrades vertical resolution, but does 60i actually retain more resolution? In other words, is 60i better than 24F resolution wise, or is 24F equally as good up-rezzed?

I believe when you use 60i and then render it to 24p you lose about 20% vertical resolution.

Right, but I was referring more towards just the in-camera settings. Was that what you implied?

Really, I just wanted to know which setting to use to capture the most resolution. From what I read, the 24F mode is a 1440 X 540 frame which is up-rezzed in-camera to 1440 X 1080... but what I'm asking is, is the 60i mode in the XH A1 a 1440 X 1080 default frame or is it also the result of in-camera up-rezzing from something smaller?

There is no uprezzing in camera. In HD the camera records 1440x1080 with a 1.33 pixel aspect ratio. Because of the way Canon extracts the progressive signal, there is a slight loss in vertical resolution in the two F modes. If you were to shoot a test chart, the camera would resolve slightly more lines in 60i than in 24p. But the chips are 1/3" 1440x1080.

Choosing a frame rate is purely an asthetic choice, 24p looks completely different than 60i. You should base your decision on how you want your project to look. Both modes look equally sharp.

60i does retain more lines of resolution than 24F does. It also has more motion samples per second, rendering a "live" or "video" look to the footage.

The easy answer

If you want 60i look shoot 60i
If you want 24P look shoot 24F

Both modes will produce the best possible resolution for the selected framerate. They look so different that they cant compete against each other.
