60i via dvx to 40% slow motion anyone?

Uhh, maybe I wasn't too clear. I was wondering why you would de-interlace the footage at all. Isn't 40% slow mo already progressive?

Disjecta was saying that he used a de-interlacer, and his footage is usually some of the best so I was wondering if there was any practical purpose to de-interlace the footage. Does it help maintain a sharper look or something?

I'm so lost these days..........ahhh someday I'll know everything.

Well, when you convert 60i down to 24p by playing it at 40% speed, you'll be turning each field into a full frame. That process is, inherently, de-interlacing. You're using one field to become a full frame. So yes, some de-interlacing will go on... you don't separately de-interlace your footage, you let the NLE handle it and it will pick & choose (at least, that's how Vegas did it, and I thought the results turned out pretty good).

Well, I tested it again and you can see for yourself:

This is 50i footage slowed down to 40% in 25fps timeline

And this is the same clip deinterlaced using FilmFX prior to slowing down.

As you can see the 2nd one is much sharper, it has much less motion blur to it. I'm not sure why it'd happen... maybe Barry can explain?

For 50i/25p timeline you wouldn't want to slow to 40%, you'd want to slow to 50% speed.

40% is only valid for 60i in a 24p timeline (since 24 is 40% of 60). 50% is the right speed for 50i in a 25p timeline (since 25 is 50% of 50).

Doh! Right =| That's what I get for hanging out with y'all here for 3 months and then getting a PAL camera...

EDIT: Ok, did it with correct slowdown this time. 50ito25p.mov - looks better than before, but once again the pre-deinterlaced clip, also slowed down 2x, is a lot more smooth - 50ideintto25p.mov
