60i or 30p? Recommendation

Hi there.

Forgive me if this question has been asked a thousand times, but I couldn't find it when I searched the forums.

I've been shooting corporate video with the DVX100b using the default settings (which I'm assuming is 60i). I have a green-screen shoot coming up, and a colleague recommended I shoot in 30p for better results.

Silly me, I never realized I could shoot in 30p. Have I been missing the boat this last year? Should I have been shooting in 30 p all along?

I'd appreciate some advice. For corporate (non dramatic video), should I always be shooting in 30p? I rarely slow-mo my footage, which I starting to learn ( and I could be wrong) is the main reason for shooting 60i.

Thanks in advance for you guidance.

Best.

Peter

Anyone?

Anyone?

Any advice at all would be appreciated.

To reiterate, in the menu settings under "Scene File" you can choose Progressive OFF - 30P - 24P - 24P(ADV).

I'm assuming that setting it to 30P, will have the camera recording in 30 frames, progressive. Setting it to OFF will have the camera shooting at 60 frames interlaced. If this is correct, the next question is: Which is better for day-to-day, corporate shooting?

It's entirely possible that I've had a stoke, and that none of what I'm saying makes sense. However, only you can help me with that :)

Looking forward to your response.

That's correct. As for what's better, I'm a progressive guy, but that's a matter of personal taste. Do what you (or your clients) think looks better.

Im a noob myself but i think i can help answer your question. You have a couple different things to think about. First off what do you want your image to look like? With 30p your going to get more of a film look not as much as 24p or 24pa but with 60i you get an image that looks more like a soap opera or home video. Also if your going to be making any fast panning or movements you will get some strobing with 30p, with 60i you will get none. You should read Barry Greens books it was very helpful tome and i know a lot of others on here.

dory, do you really think 24p is good to use when following someone snowboarding? seems like the strobing would come into effect? What shutter speed do you think should be used?

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great advice.

Here's a silly question, you have the Scene file knob on the outside of the camera and Scene file in the menu. Since it seems you can change all the parameters in the menu (30p, 24p, 24p(ADV), is it necessary to adjust the exterior knob at all? Can I not simply leave it on F1 and change settings in camera?

David, you recommend a setting of 30p and V Detail Freq of Thin. Any other suggestions for settings to improve pulling a key from green screen? Of course, if anyone else has some thoughts I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again.

Best.

Peter

P.S. I do plan to get Barry's DVX book, but I always forget until moments like this. Sorry Barry. I'll purchase it online this weekend.

Hey there.

Barry's DVX Book/DVD have been purchased!

However, I'll still need some help for the next 7-10 business days.

Thanks.

The point of the scene file wheel is that you can save six different combinations of settings and then switch between them without having to go into the menus.

I recommend progressive for greenscreen; in that respect, 24p and 30p behave the same.

You need a well-lit screen and a well-lit subject and adequate separation between the screen and the subject.

Thanks again David. The Scene File wheel makes sense now.

Regarding the green-screen shoot, yes, the screen will be evenly lit and there will be plenty of separation between the subject and the screen (8-10 feet).

The subject will be lit properly with a soft-box, as well as a hair light from above.

So, all things being equal, any other setting suggestions? Or would you recommend everything set to 0, except for V Detail Freq - Thin and 30p.

Best.

Aye. It looks great. If you do a search you can find some ski/board footy that was shot at 24p and its frickin SICK!
