60i footage shot in Squeeze mode Quality Issues?

I am having some issues with some footage I shot over the weekend.

I shot a Table Tennis match in 60i using squeeze mode...

When I capture it using FCP using the DV NTSC mode the image is very jagged and poor quality image.

I have applied the de-interlace and it did nothing noticeable .

My question is, should i be capturing this in 'DV NTSC Anamorphic' or are there settings i should use to improve the overall image quality? or has anyone run into a similar problem?

Thanks for the help

SQUEEZE and interlaced. Hm, might not be a good combo. I've never tried it, I only shoot 24p(A).

You definitely should be capturing DV NTSC Anamorphic, because SQUEEZE footage is like any other anamorphic footage.

Never deinterlace. If you want progressive images, you should be shooting 30p or 24p in-camera, and you'll get results far and above deinterlacing in FCP.

What was your V Detail setting? Barry and others stress THIN for Squeeze mode shooting.

Is this a camera setting or a FCP/ Capture setting?

Sorry i'm still a serious n00b when it comes to the advanced settings on the DVX.

The reason i shot at 60i was from what i remember reading, shooting action in 60i allows for a smoother video (vs. 24p where it adds the choppy 'film look')

60i is converted to automatically 30p in FCP (29.97fps) ?

I captured the video using DV NTSC Anamorphic but i still am getting the jagged edges that look pixelated.

If I have it right SQUEEZE mode just turns off part of the native 4:3 chip so it captures 16:9, This shouldn't effect quality... right?

So why does my footage look like it was made with a 100$ miniDV cam from Walmart. Not my 2500$ DVX.

THIN/MED/THICK is set in the scene file menu. If you shot THICK, that would explain it. You can't fix your footage, but you can set to THIN, SAVE it, and shoot with that from now on.

Also, deinterlacing with definitely kill your quality. You need to keep it at 60i (no deinterlacing), accept the interlace lines during editing, and your final product will play back nice. If you don't like the interlace lines, then shoot 30p or 24p. However, if your subject is sports, then maybe you need 60i.

60i, SQUEEZE, THICK lines, and deinterlacing... all around a bad combination.

I checked the Video Detail, It was set to THIN...

Is there a way to set your time line in FCP to show 60i (the viewer video displayed is not interlaced video, there are no motion lines)

60i is the same thing as 29.97 interlaced video. 30P only happens when you shoot 30P, or use conversion software.

it's really only 60 half frames per second.

squeeze mode on the dvx takes the remaining image and stretches it vertically to fill the full height of the frame. and when you capture, it stretches the image wide to display properly.

so there is some quality loss. but josh is probably right it being worse due to your interlaced footage.

I have shot tennis at 30p with shutter speeds ranging 1/48th, 1/60th, and 1/120th.
I have seen footage of sports shot in 24P, and 24PA, with the above shutter speeds.

the DVX's strengths are in the 30P, 24P, and 24PA settings. I have never, and probably a ton of people on this site, never even set my DVX to 60i.

I know it's probably not what you wanted to do, but you could always edit your anamorphic footage into a standard timeline, causing it to be letterboxed. it might help everything tighten up, and look better.

as far as you not seeing motion lines in the viewer, FCP default setting is interlaced, and for DV NTSC, I think it's lower field first. look that up. my guess is you shot at a high enough shutter speed to lower the chance of seeing exaggerated interlace lines.

ok i exported the video through compressor using the iphone preset and it came out very nice!

really? i doubt that. i have shot 60i and have had some great results. the DVX is wonderful camera, just as long as you keep it in native 4x3

I have shot 50i squeeze, 25p squeeze, combo's of 4:3 and 16:9, mixed footage on timelines done all sorts of un orthodoxed shooting and editing and never had a problem, maybe is a Pal thing. Pal users need not worry about pulldown and stuff like that.
