60D Unable to Turn On/ Overheat Issue or Simple Problem?

So I bought the 60d kit last Thursday Sept 23rd from Best Buy. I've had nothing but a pleasure using it shooting video and photos these past 2 weeks. Yesterday I shot a surf contest with the stock Canon battery and a 16gb Kingston Card.

Today I shoot a baptism, everything went well. I got close to 40 minutes of 720p footage and a couple photos on a fully charged battery and freshly formatted card. But then...

I turn off the camera and walk out of the church, try to turn it back on but I get absolutely no sign of life. It was slightly getting warm on the bottom so I took the battery out, and was able to charge it for 3 hours while airing out the camera.

I come back to try to turn it on again and I still get no sign of life, besides the camera body heating up. Nothing displays, absolutely nothing.

Can anyone think as to what is going on? I'm going to call Canon tomorrow, but I'm just wondering if there is a simple lock I'm missing. Any feedback is welcome and thanks for reading my post!

Sounds like a case of infant mortality. A small percentage of electronics die early in life. If you get past the first couple of months they usually last for a long time.

Is the slot for the SD card closed tightly??

it may sound stupid but this happened to me last week and for a second i thought my t2i died.

sorry if i couldn't be of any help, hope it all works out for you.

Exact: You're a funny guy.

reel richard: Yes the SD card slot was closed tightly, I even tried 3 different brands of cards and it was a no go. It feels like the camera heats up even when not switched to "on". When it is switched to "on" (and no components lite up) the center of the body at the bottom begins to get very warm.

Best Buy looked at it and said they can repair it, but if it happens again outside of the 30 days I would have to purchase the $300 extended coverage. Yeah right, it is being returned tomorrow after a phone call with Canon.

they do overheat. I was shooting and just put it on a tripod just to let it run. I was busy shooting then I peeked and it had shut it self off at 12:47. I turn it back on and out of the 26 mins I shot on the other cam it shot 20 mins. I lost 6, so it sat shut off for 6 mins. But it sounds like yours died.

My 60D gets very warm to the touch when shooting video or using the camera in Live View mode - warmer than my 5DII, the T2i I sold to get the 60D, or the 7D I owned for a while. I haven't shot that much video yet, but while it does get very warm in my hand around the grip area near the battery, I haven't had any overheating display warnings or shut downs. But it sounds like your issue (camera dying) is something different altogether.

Yeah there were no overheating signals or symbols displayed before I turned it off.

I have no idea what the problem could be but I'm not going to let it get repaired just to have it happen again. Not even worth it, so I'll wait around for the GH2.

I was being serious ;) ......and I speak from experience in the electronics industry :)
Infant mortality at an infant's christening, at least it died in a church.

they only record 12 minutes, ... before stopping and when is in stand by it will shot of after a minute to preserve the battery,
i used it for many hours doing weddings in south Florida and no overheating problem at all,

Ok so going over everything I had shot with the 60D prior to its death I've come to the conclusion I basically fried the sensor and insides of the camera.

I totally forgot I shot directly at the sun during the entire length of the sun rising above the horizon/ocean, keeping it the main subject of my shot. I used nothing but the kit lens and no type of ND filter (did use ND2 on my hvx for my 2nd angle), so I believe this could have been the demise of my camera.

Good news is I didn't bring this up at Best Buy today, they had another in stock so I just took a new exchange!

Here are some photos, video is to come.
