60D gets choppy while panning.

oh and just to clear up...its not because you are shooting in 1080 that you will get strobing...but because you shoot 24p. However as the others have said...this aint strobing...this looks like a bad tripod.

Ok, did a few more tests. 1080 @ 30 fps is alot smoother than what I was trying before which was 25fps(cause I'm in PAL land).
the whole thing about indoor lights looking strange due to the 50/60hz current, is it possible to get around this shooting in 30p if you set the shutter to 50 instead of 60?
I think the extra 5fps helps smooth things out alot, so I would be happy shooting in 30/60 if I wouldn't run into issues with lights and the 50hz electricity frequency.

In your land you want the shutter to be 1/100th of a second.

In the US 1/60th or 1/120th.

Nothing to do with the tripod. True, 24p will strobe, its all part of the look. But these cams all show this stuttering effect in 25, its not as pronounced as in 24, but its still there. Shoot in 1280x720 50 and it will be much smoother, but you pay the price of aliasing and moire being far more pronounced

How are you getting 1080 30fps on a pal camera ?This option is not available. only 1080 @24 or 25

Shouldn't it be 1/50th and 1/100th? 1/50th for 24p & 25p and 1/100th for 50p?

was just looking back at some footage i shot today at 30p, that i thought was better and i'm getting the same effect really. Feels like the buffer is getting overloaded when I pan, although not getting overload warnings. Only noticable when I pan though.
Really thought these cams would handle motion better than this.

You can swithch between PAL & NTSC.
In NTSC mode you get 60,30 and 24
In PAL mode you get 50,25 and 24

You just go into video mode, enter menu. Then goto the second yellow settings menu. In there change "video system" to either NTSC or PAL.

Yes I know that, but why would you want to use NTSC in a PAL area, it will make a lot of conversion work, re framerate for you in post. That is if you are going to output to PAL

I'll only be uploading online really so 30fps is fine.
I found that shooting at 30fps and 1/60 you get flicker from lights but drop shutter to 1/50 and flicker goes away.

I'm also in PAL land (in my case, Spain), and this is what I do:

* shoot 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p30, 720p50 or 720p60 depending on what I want; for most footage, it is 1080p24; for slight overcrank and a dreamy look, it is 1080p30; and for slow motion, it is 720p60

* choose shutter speed trying to avoid flicker first (that means 1/50 for 24p, 25p and 30p, 1/100 for 50p and 60p); if shooting in daylight only, stick to 180º rule (or closest option)

here's a very, very, very interesting talk about why most people like 24p over smoother options:

if you have the time, check out the other parts of that interview, Stu Maschwitz is a very inspirational guy:
