5DmkII MLV Raw Video now with 48khz Sound

Ted are you using Resolve or Premiere CC to initially conform files?

I can get Resolve to recognize MLV converted audio/DNGs but not Premiere CC which gives me a no metadata error.

Very exciting stuff here. On the 5D3 I can get continuous audio recording at full HD 1920x1080.

Hey Steve,
Can you give a path to the location of the build you're using.?
I have the Sept. 22 working stably on my 5D3, but would love to experiment with audio..
much thanks!!

go to this thread the first post and download The MLV_SND module. http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7122.msg59525#msg59525

you need to download the newest nightly build for the 5D3. Go to the magic lantern website and click the downloads tab at the top of the page.

Finally you need to put the mlv_snd module from the thread you downloaded into the modules folder of the nightly build

Can somebody explain in simple English how to get this new MLV for the 5DM3 onto the camera? All the abbreviations and technical stuff is confusing. cheers

does anyone one here know how to process .mlv files on a mac running Mavericks? I'm looking to batch a bunch files, but don't want to use a PC.
anyone? Thanks~

I'm starting this new thread to start discussion on the new proprietary raw format by Magic Lantern for the Canon cameras, since I have only the mkII and 7D I can only share my experience with these cams.
Hopefully this will avoid confusion with those still using the first generation raw video on the canons which does not have sound recording.

The new format has an MLV extension. It is feature rich as it can contain meta data like lens and camera settings and includes sound recording.

You can choose the sound sampling rate between 48khz, 44.1khz, 22khz, 11khz and 8khz.

There is also a new MLV browser and player that allows you to view your MLV files and select which ones to extract the dngs and wav files from for editing.

The dngs and wav files are compatible with resolve 10.

I have tested the new format on my mkII and was able to get continuous recording with sound at 1856 x 928 and 1728 x 972.
Higher resolutions can be achieved using the old raw format using raw_rec.module which is still an option in the current ML versions.

I think the mkIII can do higher resolutions with sound, maybe one using the mkIII can confirm this.

For those wanting to update their magic lantern install for the following camera;

5DmkII

Make sure you are running the latest nightly update found here:
http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/

Then download the MLV modules on the first post of this thread:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7122.0

or go here: LINK

place the mlv_rec.mod and mlv_snd.mod into your modules folder, the other files are for diagnostics and extraction, no need to place in your Card.

7D

7D MLV with sound is found in the variant code called Tragic Lantern, this code is more "experimental" than the main ML repo so use at your own risk.

For browsing and viewing MLV files and also to extract the DNGs and wav use MLV browser developed by g3gg0.
Go here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=8447.0

the first post is always updated with the latest version.

I will update this thread with my test results.

Mark III???

Mark III???

Are you already running an early version of magic lantern on your mkIII? If you are, I think its only a matter of loading the necessary MLV modules. I don't have a mkIII but if you go to the MLV modules link there is a specific autoexec.bin for the mkIII.

If you have not yet loaded ML before in your mkIII then download the ML raw video guide on the sticky by stephen mick.

Where are these mlv modules (I need the sound one)? Also just recorded mlv video and the highlights are all pink on playback in MLV Viewer.

On the 5D3, can you use an external EVF or monitor while recording full-HD video and sound 24p in MLV? I've read that the HDMI out takes up resources.

Steve,

testing the nightlies for MLV video and sound I found the more recent ones seem to have a bug as they can record past 10 min or past 40gig. The buffers look ok but will abruptly stop. I think it started with Jan 8 build.
I'm testing both 5DmkII and 7D and they seem to have similar results.

Since I don't have a mkIII, those testing can chime in to confirm if they can record continuously past approx 10min or past 40 gig. Or just simply filling up a 64gig CF or higher.
Heres my tests.

All tests run at 1728 x 972 16:9 all tests run with MLV SOUND ON.

5D mkII tests

Jan 16 nightly
skip/stop at 10'7" 40,800MB (41 GB)

Jan 14 by a.d.
skips/stops approx 10 min 40,859MB

Jan 8 nightly
skip/stop at 10'6" 40,721 (41.4 GB)

Jan 6 nightly - MLV_REC + Jan 14 a.d. -MLV_SND
OK CONTINUOUS FILLS UP CARD.

Jan 6 a.d. all modules.
OK CONTINUOUS FILLS UP CARD.

Jan 6 a.d -MLV_REC + Jan 14 a.d. - MLV_SND, FILE_MAN, MLV_PLAY
OK CONTINUOUS FILLS UP CARD.

7D tests.

Jan 16 TL
skips/stop at 10'11" 40,929MB (39.9 GB)

Jan 14 TL
skips/stops 10'10" 40,907MB (39.9GB)

Jan 9 TL
skips/stops 10'11" 40,929MB (39.9GB)

Jan 8 TL (incomplete audio features in Audio tab ML menu - did not run test)

Jan 7 TL
OK CONTINUOUS FILLS UP CARD.

Jan 6 TL
OK CONTINUOUS FILLS UP CARD.

So I guess something was wrong from Jan 8 and onwards?

Wow. Thank you!
So do we have an answer to the external monitor question with MLV on a 5D3. Does it work while recording sound?

@PTRush

Based on Steve Kahn's comment above that he can use an ext evf on his mkIII with the old module then I think yes you can since the recent MLVs have improved in speed.
My mkII can be used with an external monitor while shooting MLV Raw.

@Steve

you can give a definitive answer to this. :-)

It's so funny because I've shot with both the old and new modules and though I have a great TVLogic monitor I've favored just using the Canon screen for various reasons - mostly because the Magic Lantern display is just that good.

With the original module hdmi works perfectly well for full HD continuous recording. I just checked through recent footage I used an external monitor on (and really only because it was impossible to see the screen on the camera) and saw that it was all recorded via the old module (48fps overcrank). So, can't yet say with definite certainty if the MLV format footage will work with hdmi out.

Doing a shoot this weekend though. I'll test it and post an answer Monday if no one has answered this question first.

There is a new WINDOWS utility for extracting DNGs and WAV from the MLV files. This one is developed by a developer called Tonybeccar in the ML forums.
This has a streamlined interface and includes a viewer so you can view the MLV file before extraction.
It has other features but more will be added and features tweaked.

The nice thing about this compared to previous ones is that DNGs and their wav files are placed in individual folders.
