The new firmware for the 5D Mark II will arrive the week of March 17, 2010. This seems to be close to the NAB show.
The information briefly appeared on the Canon UK web site, it’s now gone at the URL I was given.
Features
Live Histogram for Video
Sound Level Control
24p/25p
No word on 60fps yet.
I’ve also heard there may be sound level meters, count this feature as a CR2 rumor.

The 5D firmware has *not* been announced. This is a rumor from canon rumors.

The only thing that would count as an "announcement" would be a link to a press release on an official Canon website.

Of course, rumors are occasionally true, so I'm not saying the above rumor won't turn out accurate -- only that there is no official announcement from Canon anywhere on the web.

It was on the Canon site, but was then removed.

From a poster on CR:

You’re right CR guy! The following is from the Canon UK website, copied and pasted:
“Announcement regarding movie function enhancements and a fix for the manual sensor cleaning function for the EOS 5D Mark II”
“Announcement regarding movie function enhancements and a fix for the manual sensor cleaning function for the EOS 5D Mark II. Market Support Once the preparations for releasing the new firmware are complete, this announcement will be updated.”
But if you attempt to click on the link you’ll notice that the page at:
http://www.canon.co.uk/support/system/500.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/Support/System/Search.aspx
has been removed.
Gestapo at Canon Japan seems to be particularly efficient in removing whatever they don’t like to be revealed in the times and/or ways they don’t approve, not only videos…

... which means, de facto, that it's not announced...

All I'm saying is, there's a big difference between an actual announcement, and someone saying they copied and pasted something off of a web page that doesn't exist.

The announcement, when made, will be a formal link on the Canon website, and will have actual details of what is included and when it will be available and how to get it.

well its something to talk about.. at least a break from the 'what lens should i buy' threads.. (which of course are usefull too!) and canonrumors is a pretty good site and they give it a CR3 which have proven to be reliable in the past..

the op was just sharing some info he discovered, nothing wrong with that imo!

There's nothing wrong with sharing it, of course, but the title of the thread was originally "5DII firmware announced". That's not accurate, so I changed it. Seems like that firmware announcement is going to be extraordinarily talked about, so I think it's prudent that we be accurate on the subject.

it's about f***in time!

3 days after my next film shoot too......typical

A cinema5D user was told 2 weeks by a Canon rep at a trade show in London last week so it looks promising.

Ya, I just shot another commercial with the 30p mode. Please, please let this include 29.97p & 60p.

If they actually include sound level control and audio meters per the rumor, I think I'll fall off my chair.

March is good for me.
...
Then again, March of last year was good for me too.
...
Come on already Canon!

cinema 5d has a photograph and says audio metering and histogram

no 50/60p

24 p with audio is pretty cool

poor scarlet .. i hope it comes out faster than i think and i hope its awesome as i expect

canon is rockin ! c'mon red lets do this!!

good time to be a consumer in the digital cinema world

What has been announced in Poland is 24,25 and 29.97 fps only also 48 khz sound with manual sound level control no auto gain and no faster frame rates as I didn't think they would.

What excites me about this camera apart from the update is that somewhere in a garage or basement. Some tech geek is figuring out how to tap the chip for all that raw data. Like the Andromeda did for the DVX, remember that. Imagine with the update coming, and i'm sure it will, and if that geek out there manages to do this, well, bye bye scarlet bye bye RED bye bye just about anything with less than a full 36x24 sensor. Barry what do you think, the raw data coming of this chip to a outboard capture device say a firestore like recording device? These already exist aka the Nano thingy and I think there are a few others. Now that is exciting, 14 bit raw in the palm of your hand, or would it be more than 14 bit? As far as my knowledge base goes the chip is an analog device and it is only after the data leaves the chip is when the compression of any kind is imposed on the data. So the output is only limited by the DSP' in the system correct?

Its all good if they do its all good if they don't. This industry is so dynamic right now you need to think a year into the future, hell more like 3 to 5 years. Right now Jim over at RED is pondering what the 5D has done to his Scarlet pre-sales, maybe, and also wondering what the other DSLR manufacturers are coming out with. But IMO the scarlet will still be out of my price range once you factor in all the things you need on top of the brain for it to work. As I said in my previous post I'm waiting for that geek out there to get to work.

Something else is Canon is huge and has been around for a longtime. Their R n D department is probably like walking into NASA. Jim and RED are a lot smaller and newborns when it comes to this. So it is only natural that they have a different time frame for release. The area where RED is ahead of Canon is they really know how to use the internet and all of its streams to hype a product and maintain interest until the release date.

We live in an instant gratification era. I need it now. This has partly been imposed on people by APPLE, nah just kidding, but they did invent firewire which led to this whole digital acquisition medium which brought with it the instant digitization era. Remember working with video pre 1996. Wow is this reply off topic, I'll shutup now.

C'mon geek get going!!!

the only way this camera will actually compete with the scarlet, is if that geek manages to bypass the line skipping(and solve the Moire pattern issues), and figure out how to get all the cool features that the scarlet/epic series is boasting. I had a deposit down on the Red one and then they released the specs of the scarlet system, I took my money back. I'll probably buy a 5d or 7d just to have in the interim, but it won't really make a dent in the Scarlet sales because, spending 2.5 k now to have an A cam for now and a B cam for when the scarlet is finally here, is not a very hard decision when you are about to spend 10x that for a full scarlet package with all the bells and most of the whistles.

I'm not putting the Canon down, for what it costs it's jaw dropping.
