5DII DOES 1080P footage!!!!!!

I just follwed a link elsewhere on this site where they discussed the Mk II. After my posting I noticed that this is a Nikon thread. I´m sorry for this. To be clear: Nikon makes exellent cameras. The D3 and the new D700 pushes the technology to new hights. We, the users, are the real winners. Which brand we choose - Nikon, Canon or another brand - usually comes down to personal preferences and experiences, how much money you have to spend and which brand has the edge at the time of buying. The main issue should be the quality of our work, or what?

Hi folks,

Here's Reverie
http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/

But be warned, they kind of blew it. No post, mostly bad shutter and no ae lock in some shots. Seems like a photo guy tried film, cause some of the stills and lighting is great in my opinion.

Other question: What's a good sd video monitor in the 4-7" scale?

Cheers

Hey Dual,

Great observation! I have to bite my tongue when looking at most footage on this site. Don't they teach light at film schools?

I hear good things about this 7.9" PANASONIC.

Bit pricey at $2,349.95 so it had BETTER be good.

Whow! I was thinking below 500 $. If I had that much dinero I'd buy a red.
What about the Datavideo TLM700? Is it good and are there similar ones anywhere? Just don't find them anywhere.

@frisco: I couldn't believe my eyes when he lifted in that helicopter. That's sooo expensive. Unfortunately it makes no sense with the "story".

@Canon: Give it to me give it to me give it to me!!! :P

I'd recommend lcd4video - under 200/- bucks. I used it as a SD field monitor with my DVC30. You dont really need that much for SD..
I'm selling mine if you are interested - but you can also buy it from their website..

Thanks zcream. I'd be interested if it hat a battery mount and better resolution. 240 lines isn't enough.

Laforet's piece looks excellent. Especially with a pre-release model, a few hours to set it up and his self confessed lack of eperience as a film maker. He knows a thing or two about photography and marketing and his project has gotten more attention in the past few hours than many here could dream of accomplishing. I am not getting this camera but I believe those who will get it are going to be very happy. Kudos Vincent Laforet for your great job. Again, you made NYC look beautiful one more time.

Heyzcream, me again. I looked at that lcd4video again and found the battery kit :P. Also I realized that even all other sd monitors have no more than 240 lines downwards.

I'm pretty interested in building a DIY 7" with hdmi in for my 5d mark ii.

There's rolling shutter on any CMOS camera, even on a Red. The 5D and Red both minimize it. If you read the blog, some of the helicopter footage (the grainy, shutter stuff) is an Xh-A1.

"I'm pretty interested in building a DIY 7" with hdmi in for my 5d mark ii."

check out the 8.6 hdmi monitor from ikan . they also have a 5.6 hdmi with higher resolution in the works

Thanks, but as I said I'll walk the diy path. It's too easy and fun to save money on an hdmi monitor just right now. Prefer saving it for a nice zeiss ze lens droooool :)

I can attest to the RED having rolling shutter.

After 3 days of tests it reared its ugly head when were shooting at night on hollywood blvd and undercranking the camera at 3fps. Playback had REALLY bad rolling shutter.

I' m currently in New Zealand on honeymoon...and am getting some really nice shots out of both my HVX and my 40D SLR....but it IS a lot to lug around whilst also trying to enjoy some of the sights!!

My new wife feels a degree of resentment that it distracts me from her and feels even stronger resentment at being asked to carry several bags of equipment on our honeymoon! ;)

I have explained that this is the land of the Lord of the Rings and to not film HD here would be a travesty of the highest proportions!

My beloved would love a 5D MkII right now...just to keep her out of "pack horse" mode...

For travel (& honeymoons in particular) this new cam could be a winner!

You're exactly correct. And perhaps that's what the 5DII is designed for; upper-middle-class vacation photographers. By Canon's own definition the 5DII is not a 'pro' body even for stills, they have intentionally gimped it in many aspects (poor AF, flash-sync speed, lack of 24p, prosumer body, etc.).

The D90, and the 5DII, may be the perfect camera to take on vacations. This is exactly the camera Canon is aiming for, we most definitely will see better features, more control, and superior extendability on the 1D/1Ds MkIV which are the only dSLR that Canon feels to be 'professional' (if they have video) or we may see a dedicated video camera that has these options with these large dSLR sensors.

Regardless, I think you should be enjoying your honeymoon rather then posting here

Now THIS is logic. I can see some really great footage from weddings and such coming out of this here beauty. Especially since you can click right over and snap some serious stills.

You know what? Now that I think about it? This Camera (As it sits) would be the perfect Addition to the Wedding Videographer and Photographer's arsenal.

Supreme lowlight aye?

I question your judgement in many ways........

- Why are you outside?

- Did you want a wife or a grip?

- Bringing that much gear on a Honeymoon is dumb.

- Bringing the wife on a shoot is dumb.

- Your wife is right.

- Your wife is right.

- Have fun trying to buy new gear in the future.

- Are you smart enough to be married?

Have a great Honeymoon and Hope the new 5D is your answer!

Doesn't mean we should stop pushing Canon for 24/25p:evil: I've been Canon shooter for over a decade, used to own a 5D, last year I've purchased a Nikon D300 and a bunch of lenses because I was fed up with some of Canon's practices (primarily their AF and metering). Unfortunately, the 5DII has confirmed my insecurities in this subject.

Its exactly like Canon to play the market segmentation game- to intentionally handicap their lower-end products not to compete with their higher-end products which they charge more for. There is no reason for them to limit the control of their 5DII if they were not planning something to slot above it. Which is the good news. So there is hope for a better video camera. But I wish they could have at least incorporated a feature that is important to so many users like 24p and half-decent AF for stills. This, in my mind, is what I'm dissatisfied with.

Just found out that the 5D2 will have AUTO mode ONLY in movie mode. You can lock the exposure and compensate, but it doesn't allow control of aperture or ISO independently from each other. I think the D90 is even better in this regard right? You can at least set the aperture you want to shoot the movie at prior to start recording?
