5D3 - Current Magic Lantern Stable Build

Hey crew, would someone mind posting a link to the most recent solid Magic Lantern build for the 5D3. I deleted mine about a year ago and would like to reinstall it. If I remember right...the build could be buried in the forum. They have probably improved it since I used it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey man. Not sure if you found what you're looking for, but just in case.

There is no longer a 'stable build' for ML. It's all a rolling update of the nightlies. That said, I've been using it for 2-3 years with no issues. YMMV.

Rather than post links, here's a step-by-step in case anyone else has the same question.

Navigate to Magic Lantern Forum
Click 'Downloads'
Click 'Download Nightly Builds'
Select camera from drop-down menu
Follow instructions

5D3 firmware exists for 1.1.3 and 1.2.3. Directions for choosing which is best for you are detailed on their separate pages.

The post-production side of MLV has really come a long long way. Super easy to convert to high-res masters etc.

Good luck!

I have noticed that they've gone back to nightly builds, which is awesome. Maybe I can tack on a question that I couldn't get answered on the ML forum:

I'm still using the August 7 2014 Build with my 5D3 (1.13), which was the last build before a1ex and company took a break from posting nightly builds for a while (a year?). It was also around that time that I stopped tracking ML development, because there was nothing new to track. Now that they're back to nightlies, have there been any significant improvements? I haven't been following it and I'm just curious to know if anything noteworthy has been added.

Hey, thanks guys. Really appreciate it. I thought this thread got lost in the pile. I do still need to downloadML again. I'll follow your instructions. I have a 5D3 as a backup camera to pull out for BRoll on occasion. I'm definitely missing the ML functionality.

Just wondering what the ML team is working on to warrant nightly builds anymore? New camera models? New features for RAW video? I am still using on old version of just RAW video for 1.2.3 as I saw folks having pink frames and never moved to MLVs. I guess enough time has passed to find a stable version for MLV.

MLV recording has been pretty stable on the 5D3 with fast CF cards for the past eighteen months now. I haven't seen a pink frame in quite a while (and I'm running an old build)! Plus you can record audio. You do lose the magic zoom though. Definitely worth the upgrade, in my opinion.

1.13 is supposed to be slightly more stable than 1.23, but 1.23 allows your LCD to mirror an external monitor.

I'm also curious about what further developments have been lately, though.

Hey man. I'm not a super pro with it or anything. That said, most of the threads I follow deal with post prod - making high res digital masters for edit, lossless compression for MLV, etc. MLV capture has proven remarkably reliable if everything is set up right. Sounds like your experience is the same.

I was primarily following full res silent pictures development, which is now in the nightlies. Great for saving the shutter during timelapse and being a 'little' stealthy. Haven't had time to experiment with it much because of work.

Got the new firmware up and running. Super simple to do. Love having these features back. Kinda makes me love the 5D3 again. Thanks for all the responses.

Could someone in few main summarise what 5D3 with current ML can do? I did checked that about 2 years ago, every new build just says what was changed and I'd love to know what it can do.

Awesome. I feel the same. I really appreciate what happens over time with this type of project. It is a counterforce to the blistering pace of the upgrade cycle that is the current market reality. For example, with a bit of tinkering, it's possible to recommission an old beat up 'dead' 5D3 with a worn out shutter into a 14 bit raw-only cinema cam (just remove the shutter). Though I wouldn't rely on it for a whole movie, this camera will prove very useful for specialty shots for a long time.

Side-note, not sure if you use 'Digic Peaking' instead of 'Focus Peaking' but it's a good way to have a focus assist without taxing the CPU so hard when shooting MLV. Anyway, happy shooting.

I just practiced the ML workflow. In the past, I would adjust the raw settings in AE. DaVinci is so much faster. Would someone mine mapping our the 5D3 - RawMagic - Davinci workflow.

My main question is how to adjust the raw settings and make sure the raw workflow stays intact through out the Davinci Coloring process until export.

Would basically like to know others general workflow.

I had a bunch of presets saved in Resolve 11 that no longer apply in Resolve 12. I have been a little lost since that update. It used to be that you could click on the gear in the corner to bring up Project Settings and then automatically apply a BMDFilm 4K colorspace to all clips (important to choose 4K because it has similar dynamic range to the 5D3) and then a BMDFilm to Rec709 display and output LUT. But since they've now added this new Color Management menu, I'm still trying to get my head around it.

Here is a thread with pointers from people a lot more knowledgeable than I: http://magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=15801.0

I should also add that RawMagic can deliver compressed Cinema DNGs which reduces the files to half of their original size. But audio sync is not automatic when importing RawMagic CDNG exports into Resolve 12 yet. I've reached out to the RawMagic developer and he says that he already has it fixed in an update that will be released soon.

EDIT: This seems to have resolved itself in the new 12.3 update.

Just saw this. Are you on Mac or PC?

On Mac, I use MLVFS - a rather genius approach for getting MLV files to show up in the DR media pool. Very cool. Just search MLVFS on the forum and read the first post on the thread for how-tos. It involves installing FUSE, but is fairly simple to get up and running.

I then take the media through DR - adjusting exposure and white balance - and export 'Cinelog-C' ProRes 4444XQ digital masters. Cinelog-C isn't free. Here is an overview of the workflow: http://www.cinelogdcp.com/overview-davinci-resolve/

It seems the DR 12 update made using Cinelog-C superfluous, but I still use it because I'm familiar with the workflow. The thread QuickHitRecord linked is a pretty remarkable document of various conversion experiments; all of the variations of which are free. Haven't had time to test it all out myself in DR 12, but that is my next task, when work permits.

I just did a comparison between DNGs from MLVFS and RawMagic. I can't tell you which is more accurate, but RawMagic's DNGs seem like they are about a stop hotter than the MLVFS DNGs. This probably explains why following the steps in the thread above have yielded such poor results for me, as MLVFS seems to be the baseline for a lot of them and I have been using RawMagic.

I've notified RawMagic's creator Rarevision about this. In the past, they've been great about answering my questions and rolling out new updates.

I also noticed a weirdness with ML today. I was prepping for a still photography shoot. We needed a really slow shutter trick shot for one of them. Then I adjusted the shutter with ML installed...I was able to change the shutter value on the camera...but the actual shutter always released the same speed when snapping the photo. I actually had to remove the ML card from the camera and use the native Canon software to adjust the shutter and have it actually adjust...when on the stills side.

Weird.

thanks! I am on a man (5k iMac late 2015 maxed out). I'll give this a shot and test it out. Really appreciate it!

I've found I need to increase exposure about 1 stop when using the MLVFS –> DR –> 4K BMD Film Input workflow. Haven't purchased RawMagic and don't intend to; so lack the resultant experience to attest to its efficacy. Awesome that you've found a workflow that works for you.

What a drag. Hope the shot worked out.

I should be forthcoming that though I've had no issues with ML, I don't use it when there's money on the table. As wonderful as it is, it introduces a whole lot of variables into a professional situation where reliability is the highest priority. I did not intend to imply otherwise.

Check to see if the shutter speed override has been enabled in the ML menu.
