5D vs D7000

I disagree with you, and also am a fan of the camera generated peaking on the EX1, but its not a debate for this thread,

I just want to know what the D7000 is pushing out of its HDMI, each user can evaluate this information as they will :)

I don't know for sure but it looks like 960 or 1024 pixels wide on a 1280x720p signal (I am positive that it's a 720 signal). The image area is smaller than the 1280x720 signal it is putting out. But the stats (ISO, shutter, aperture etc.) fill the whole screen

"I am positive that it's a 720 signal" - because it pops up on the monitor when you egage the monitor?

sounds good, does it pass on the HUD (the digital level) to the monitor while recording,

I think (had the impression on a quick test) the HDMI out on the D3 was quite good, so guess this is similar

Two things I note from DP review

AV out is a 'robust' jack plug

HDMI is a full size one

How is the AF with a wide does it have face rec

(im thinking steadicam)

i'm confused. you disagree but you also know and love the benefits of peaking? i'm not the one who brought up focusing, if the point is just the output res and each user can figure out the rest, why bring it up? ;-)

Yes - the monitor indicates 720p when live view is engaged. It switches to 1080i when playback is engaged. All of the finder info is relayed to the HDMI, including the horizon display and autofocus target. The image is very good - very sharp and little aliasing.

Autofocus works well on all of the lenses I've tried - 12-24, 24 prime, 17-35 2.8, 28-70 2.8., 70-200 2.8, 105 micro, 14-24 2.8. Continuous autofocus is not my preference because it hunts too much and makes for breathing footage (if you are used to Nikon's amazing, decisive still camera autofocus, this will be a let down). My preference is AF-S (single burst autofocus). Push the shutter release halfway when shooting and the focus jumps into sharpness with one or two "breaths." You can do this as often as needed to update the focus. After you get the image sharp you can pull manually. Face recognition works very well (except for the hunting - the AF always overshoots focus and comes back) but I find that the scenes are often too complex to make it practical.

what you read on dpreview is wrong about the HDMI connector - it's actually a mini HDMI. But it seems perfectly robust for field work. Would love to find a short angle cable for it. Haven't tried the AV jack yet.

Regarding focusing, resolution is important, but you can find sharp focus without it. The brain/eye is good at interpreting the dynamics of the image sharpness as you focus "through" the sharpness on either side and the return to the middle (much like the way the contrast autofocus works).

thanks for the in depth reply - it sounds like a great camera

still mungled on 24p in 25FPS land and if it is actually worth swapping, there are benefits to using ap less nikkors - i think the 17-55 2.8 would be a great lens,

at the moment im in a mess with my lenses nikon and canon - looking to move back to nikon in time

IMO the AV jack on the 5d provides the most reliable connection (not the one on the 7d) - Im happy to have that as backup is the HDMI goes wrong

Stills wise I use AFs all the time - great

On the face rec etc im looking to use AF when recording motion only when contact with the camera is not an option (steadicam)

The rest of the time manual is fine

To me the 7d and the 5d are totally different to use with a monitor, the 7 giving far better information on focus with a small HD monitor

I would consider buying another DSLR but 'my spec' is that it must give out at least 720 to the monitor, we now know the nikon does, unlike the 5d

I find the 5d basically non reliable for shooting non planned shots, its defo my B cam compared to the 7 and that because of the monitor output only

the EX1 is a different animal (at the wide end) with heaps of DOF and peaking is a useful tool for that , with the EX1 at the long end I prefer the image zoom function for focus asisst

I dont not feel peaking has value on a cam like the 5 where one is going for shots where if the nose is in the eyes are out, just a plain good view is required, especially on faces where there is nothing for the peaking to grab apart from maybe an eyelash, if the hair peaks you know you are backfocussed - not 'in' as some publicity material would have you believe

now you're talking about focusing again, i thought that was off topic and this thread was only about what the cameras put out. :-)

Ah, whatever they want to talk about i fine.

The 5D and the D7000 aren't really in the same league or class, so any discussion about the D7000 is fine. I just feel that the 5D is one of the best dslr's for video and it is interesting to see how the D7000 stacks up next to it. Traditionally, I prefer Nikon color, but I have started to experiment with Canon since Nikon has been slow to the video arena. True the D7000 is sharper than Canon, but there is more stair stepping and moire' than Canon at default settings.

There is more aliasing from what I've seen so far, but I suppose you can improve it significantely by dialing down sharpness?! James, I never managed to get as satisfying colors straight out of Canons as from Nikons, are you talking about post processing or experimenting with colors in picture styles?

I have been playing around with picture styles in camera.

With the D90, I didn't really have to do much post color work, unless I wanted something stylized, or if doing something polished, it looked good straight out of the camera, and was well for DVD production. So, I really enjoyed not having to do a ton of color tweaking in post.

With the Canons, they expose too red sometimes, so I changed the hue slider towards green and it looks better than default for white skin. And you can also fine tune the white balance.

Yes, I've done similar tweaking, but overall still no comparison to Nikon colors :(
