5D replacement announcement next week

Are there room for improvements? Absolutely and it seems the C300 has hit most of these improvements yet maintained the basic form-factor of a well built DSLR but the price...

The C300 has some things I dislike, and that is the right hand grip doesn't have nearly the options that a 60D right hand grip has. Which means the operator is going to have to be taking his/her hand off the lens more than they might like.

I use my left hand on the lens barrel quite a lot, and if I have to move my hand mid shot to adjust some function, then it destabilizes my shot. Now, this doesn't apply to every situation, but it will bug me when those situations do come up.

I have the exact opposite experience. Haha. And I prefer shoulder/handheld over any other form of shooting.

When shooting shoulder mounted, the right hand has to go up above your shoulder, and then hit a sharp angle to bend your wrist to get at the controls. This becomes an issue when shooting for long hours. You probably don't care about it. Which is fine. It bothers me, and shows it is a stills DSLR and not custom designed for motion capture.

And when shooting front heavy butt-stock rigs, this issue is amplified. The wrist is at a bad angle.

My favourite era was the 70's. Serpico and Taxi Driver look like they were shot with a 5D. OMG only 540 lines!

Not going to lie to you dude, but movies like Taxi Driver looks awesome and it's further from 540 lines and more towards HD than you may realise. I know it's a 4k master reduced to 2k/1080p but it's somewhere between 720p and 1080p resolved detail for sure.

Taxi Driver bluray-screen shots:

It sure has limited latitude and it's super grainy but I love it. I can definitely tell that a 5D would never make something that looks like that. 5D just has too much mush in the shadows (and these films thrive on shadows), and 5D's skin detail/texture is too chunky plastic. And there has been no videos shot on a 5D that I have seen that come anywhere near that retro Taxi Driver look. Not Shane Hurlbert's nor Philip Bloom nor Gale Tattersal's work and not my work or your work can make DSLRs like the 5D look anything like that.

What we need is a darn DSLR without any moire/weird downsampling... GH2 is winning so far... hopefully NAB will have good competitor soon :)

I digress, though. If it's easier to get on with the concept that, in feature films "story is king" then okay. Have at it! xD I'll be over here with my own demo comparing everything to everything else; because that's what we do, even when we don't know what's going on.

Of course, story is kind of subjective (abit) and you have every right to think alot of those films are terrible stories... but a good indicator as any is probably also the box office. I do have very mainstream (and art house) tastes and I don't see ANY "bad" stories in the http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm Top grossing films list. All of those films are pretty magical, well written, well acted, well shot, just well done. Yes... even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Twilight :P

I see a bunch of top listers that have cliche and over-done stories, that were extremely well executed.

Avatar = every other story about "white man" coming to take over "colored man's" territory. There's nothing new about it, there's nothing fresh about it.. aside from the visual experience.

Me thinks people just get good story confused with good movie or good execution, which aren't the same thing. Likewise, a good script doesn't even equate to a good story.

A good director can take a mediocre/poor story and execute it masterfully, then turn it into a good movie.

INCEPTION, I'm looking at you.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Horrible narrative.

Twilight? Horrible narrative

Yes, I know Avatar is pretty much like the Disney movie Pocahontus... but that's purely in technical beats. It's still pretty good IMO and I enjoyed it more than Pocahontus and Dances with Wolves.. There really is only 12 kinds of stories. I could argue that LOTR mythology is a better Bible or Quran if I really wanted to.

Being 'new' isn't a criteria for good either (which is why Art House films generally are hard to watch). It's not about being original but doing something that makes yourself (and hopefully other people) feel awesome.

I disagree with your "horrible narrative"s or that Inception is "mediocre" script. I actually have the Inception script with me... I love it!

Whatever people want to believe, have at it. But that list has so many movies with completely bad stories (but good scripts) it's pretty much exactly what I'm talking about.

There's a reason why Feature Films are referred to as the director's medium, while television's the writer's medium.

You're free to disagree, I've probably seen the movie more times than most people... in the theater at IMAX prices.

The script is good, the story is bad. There is a major difference.

Drive had a horrible story line. Very cliche. Even to put it in the realm of Avatar.

Twilight to young girls of a few years ago, is Terminator 2 to guys in the 90's. It was more about the cultural impact and emotive payoff. And their legacies will never be confined to their supposed legitimacy as narratives.

And holy crap I LOVED Drive to death. Definitely top three of the last five years.

Yes. yes. And more yes.

=B That's not called a good story, that's called a good experience/movie.

No, that's your judgment only - that's the major difference. And again, I will have to disagree. I think the story of Inception is quite good (it's not something crazily epic but the filmmaking makes it so lol), however I feel the script is abit laboured and over-explains things (which is probably why it was only nominated but didn't win). However, alot of people I spoke to was confused by the film despite how I thought the film was really simple.... which again, is opinions and subjective.

Also how dare you James for saying Drive had a horrible story! NOOOoo!!1111

Honestly, subjectivity (take no offense to this) is a lazy way out of things. You get good and bad from comparing it to something else, otherwise there's no bar and everything is either good or bad.

Inception's story makes no damned sense at all, from any perspective. The only thing that makes sense in the "story" is the fact that people can talk to each other by communicating with their mouths. Everything else is ridiculous and haphazardly sewn together.

From a story perspective, anyway.

From the perspective of a major motion picture, the script (which is not synonymous to story in any way shape or form) is pretty solid for what the content is, and the execution excels above its written format. It is a great experience on a big or small screen, one that evokes several different kinds of emotions.

Inception's story was just about a guy doing one last job and see's his family again. It's a good, story. Kholi, it seems you're talking about random plot elements or mechanics on Inception...

Also, those Star Wars films, man, they sure look like a Sony camera heh.

No offense, again--and I'm glad this is the discussion and not pixels, but your definition of story is vastly different from what the actual definition of story is to a writer.

The premise of Inception is what you just said, that isn't the story.

Inception's story is "A bunch of people jump in and out of each other's dreams in order to dupe the successor of a major coporation into changing his mind about how he runs the impending monopoly of energy trade."

Notice how you just described the plot there?

One more +1 for Inception. One of the most moving and engaging cinema experiences I've had in years, and the film has stuck with me since, often inspiring good conversations with others who have seen it, and getting us to talk about this 1/3 of our life spent in dreams, this other world we inhabit.

It worked for me. It didn't for some others here. Could we not just leave it at that? There's no such thing as 'good.'

Nah, I'm not being condescending, that's the whole point of stating not to take offense; I guess it doesn't work?

The plot wouldn't be that succinct nor explained like that.

This is the same kind of debate that people have over theme, etc. It'll go on too long and in the end, even that kind of doesn't matter. That's to say that cinemoose is still off.

Everyone's entitled to think what they want, if you think a good script = a good story then cool.

How many times did you catch it? I saw it six times opening week in IMAX, bought the special edition blu ray and added six to seven more times to the watch list.

I never said it was a bad movie, I said the story was bad. There is a difference. =D

oh Kholi.

Haha but if you keep saying 'No offence', the heavy subtext is "No offence, but, I'm just opinionated and going to throw my weight around now"... so it's never a good idea to say 'No offence'!

Also that's twisting my words abit... I said a good story is a good story, all those in the Box Office are good stories (IMO) and as I stated, there's really only about 12 or so stories. Just not necessarily the best scripts as I mentioned with Star Wars, and I think is what you're trying to get at before all of that discussion on the other films mentioned above :P

And I saw Inception 3 times at the cinema (not IMAX) and I own it on bluray/DVD/digitalcopy and I have the script book for funses. Probably only seen it 5 times in total...

Aaanyway yeah back on topic about camera replacements lol

Lammy's right: "Inception's story was just about a guy doing one last job and see's his family again."

With story, there needs to be that backbone. For me it was always there, for others, it wasn't, clearly. Bad. Good. All very subjective and pointless to talk about without a few drinks between us...
