5D replacement announcement next week

That was a sweet comparison. The MK3 is going to have to be incredible for me to drop coin on it in lieu of my current 5D. I doubt it's going to be incredible. I'm with Hicks on resolution and cost, until you crack that 10k precipice it's all pretty much similar. The GH2 is housing fools for under a grand and with that said Sony/Panny/Canon should be ashamed to bring another generation of cameras to market that don't match up to the quality of the GH2 hack. At least we know off the bat that Nikon is gonna let you go out the camera to an external device, but then they don't have any other horses in the race either.

I shot with the AF100 and the FS100 which I owned both for awhile and I definitely disagree with the resolution being anywhere close. When I had detail set to 0 on the AF100, I could not stand the artifacts it was creating in underexposed areas of a shot. I spent A LONG time working with this and finally just shot with -4 or -5 and was happy with the results. This is NOT the case with the FS100. I shoot with the default setting and I think the sharpness and resolution are much crisper looking. Now, I agree that resolution isn't everything, but for me, this difference is night and day. I know it isn't just the sharpness difference because I could see more detail in the FS100 images. Everyone who sees the work I've done with the FS100 is always amazed at the amount of detail it captures. Which of course, I agree, is not always a good thing if people have "issues" with their faces! :)

I am curious to know all the shooting differences image wise with the new 5D for that price as well. What is the motivating factor to push a stills user to upgrade.

The 1080P of the GH2, vs 5DMK2 vs AF100 etc... resolution comparisons are comparing a Toyota Camry to a Nissan Sentra.

With the hack here, I couldn't disagree with that statement more. The Driftwood hacked GH2 is much closer imagewise to our RED than our 5d. That fact upsets a lot of people, but the eyes don't lie.

I think that sums up who the upgrade will be for. They've given us a hint as to their road map from a cinema perspective. A 4k DSLR on the horizon is what we all really want for video. I just don't see how this is gonna be a quantum leap for us video shooters. I expect them to tame aliasing and moire some...but Nikon has done this as well. The whole announcement is kind of eh, especially seeing the beast that is the GH2 with hack for under a grand. Time will tell.

Absolutely. Yes. And more yes. 5D isn't even close.

I think panasonic is the one in the position to bring what people want, seems like they got a little paranoid with the AF100... drawbacks of reading too many forum posts about people hating moire/aliasing. xD Muahaha

Very well. But in some departments, D4 is a superior camera.

Indeed. A major part of digital filmmaking is getting rid of the TOO sharp "HD" look.

Resolution is one part of the equation. DOF, dynamic range, bokeh, filmic noise/grain, and lighting are also important parts of the filmic look equation. I take production stills with the 5D and they look like vista vision not HD video. How I wish the video looked like the stills, bring on Canon RAW video! The stills have more dynamic range and of-course the resolution is much higher particularly at higher ISOs. The GH2 resolves well but it has less dynamic range, you can compensate for this with good lenses, lighting, and production design.

Here's the specs for the camera I'm shooting my feature with-

full frame or S35 sensor
clean/useable 6400+ ISO
no rolling shutter
no aliasing/moire
no line skipping
12+ stops dynamic range
lossy intra-frame codec
uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2 HDMI out
no chroma noise, filmic grain structure
1080p 60p
lightweight, max 1.4kg

The only camera that meets these specs right now is the C300 although it doesn't do 60p 1080p. The FS100 comes close but I don't like the highlight rolloff and it has an issue with sensor reflections. The only cameras on the horizon that I know of that may be of use are the 1DX, the 5D replacement, and the Nikon D4. The D4 has a big question mark due to potential aliasing/moire line skipping/pixel binning issues.

To me, one of the most interesting wide-range options out there, as of now, it is the D4.

Here is another eloquent sample of David vs. Golias or as you wish, how there's no excuse to not be moviemaker these days. When people have no idea who shot who... As said, 'the' woman is the only safe part of the equation : D

Ya reckon? I'm shooting a $3 Million feature and I don't give a damn about 4k. See spec list above. 2k looks great if it's actually honest 2k not some pixel binned line skipped bastard marketed as "full HD video". Give me RAW 2k that actually resolves 2k and I'll be a happy camper.

I so want the D4 to be the uber DSLR. The Nikons have more dynamic range than Canon, no chroma noise, filmic looking grain, crazy high ISO. Nikons are just more aesthetically pleasing. BUT the early examples from the D4 look really soft. I'm waiting to see some footage recorded to a ninja.

3M? And you can't just rent anything out there? X_x is Sydney that devoid of camera tech?

But this time I agree with cinebuddy, 4K is an industry standard, Anthony. Probably, for an author 2K is full enough. And actually, S16/16mm or even S8 won't put you out of the big screen if your work is good enough for the screening(S). Even with the 4K argument of future proof. No lower format will be able to put you out of there, if your content has earned its due right. Imagine convince a new Cassavetes otherwise ;)

This footage was not shoy by Jonas Mekas but this sample is interesting as food for thought addressed to many of a geek that exists inside each one of us :-)

Shot on 3 mediums HD Video, Still Photographs and Super 8mm Film.

There's like 2 rental house here and you could own the body half way through shooting a feature. Besides I sleep with my camera.

Hehe, bring on the apocalypse I say. I like the super 8 the best.

Most cinemas around the world project in 2k if they even have digital projection!

Right on the spot.

And some sharp glass too. Now Barry won't have bloody shitty codec excuse to blame ;-) BTW, where are you Barry? Your voice is missed... :-)

I'm sorted for glass, full set of Leica R and 2x Iscorama 36s.

If Canon just fix the line skipping and rolling shutter, raise the ISO and dynamic range, and improve the codec then the Mark III will be a keeper. I can't imagine why these things wouldn't have been addressed, they all appear to have been with the 1DX. Uncompressed out would be great but if it has a great codec I can live without it. Internal prores 422 or Canon RAW video is the way ahead.
