5D replacement announcement next week

I was looking at Bloom's extreme low light test and the C300 still has the dodgy Canon chroma noise that the Sonys and Nikons don't have. You have to push the ISO much higher to see it than you do on the 5D however. From the samples I've seen 6400 looks like 1250 on a 5D.

Today I ran (literally) around with some friends and 12 cameras in the worst scenarios, Epic, C300, GH2, etc.

I'll get a good look at the graded material after the DaVinci session with them all, but just from glancing... mmn... nah, Canon's own DSLRs don't have anything on C300 image. Down to the pixel. It's one of those cases where I'm pretty confident if people put their hands on the camera, they would see what everyone who actually has touched the camera is raving about.

That happened to me with the GH2 hack, didn't really follow all the noise until I had first hand footage and experience. If anything, it made me kind of sad that I don't have 16K to toss at tech that's going to be outdated under its own brand in a year or so. Also made me miss video cam format (built-in NDs and long-lasting batteries, easy media) more than I had realized.

Epic of course is winner overall, but the C300's a dream cam as well. 5D gets nowhere near in any department... sorry.

Seconding Pappas on the build quality, feels like a brick and it took all of thirty minutes to get around the menus without even touching the manual.

The C300 is the front runner for my feature right now, but I'm waiting to see what the MKIII, 1DX, and D4 can do. I've pretty much ruled out every other camera.

I know this is kind of pushing terminology, and it's not necessarily accurate, but having seen Canon poop on XL-H1 users with their XH-A1 (oh those angry threads were amazing) I'd probably be surprised either way if the 5D got anywhere near C300 quality. Talking about resolving detail, clarity, so on and so forth.

But, my guess is that because it's Full Frame and that crowd is so small, they don't have to get it to that place and they'll keep on putting out tiny, hardly noticable upgrades to the actual image until the C300's shooting 4~5K and that becomes the difference between buying the EOS-C brand and DSLR.

That's JUST a guess, though. So yeah.

Not wanting to deal with RED post this time around, and wanting to move fast through the entire process (start to finish), C300 just became my top choice as well, barring the color session shows that it'll hold up down the chain to delivery/finishing.

Yeah but the 5D is Canons cash cow and primarily because of the video so I expect a bit more. Canon knows what we want fixed and they're not going to sell anywhere near as many of them if they don't fix it. There's plenty of other options now.

Would you shoot a feature with the C300s codec?

That's the word I was looking for Kholi- "Brick" It feels like a brick.

I loved the menu layout too, intelligently designed. Built in ND's is awesome, and now an overlooked feature since the DSLR movement. Long lasting batteries, proper outputs for monitoring are not to be taken lightly. That's why I feel the DSLR's are not some total take over. When it comes to the brass tax of it all, you need a professional camera that is designed for production. Yeah people say you can do it with out all that, and yes you can, just as you could paint an illustration with a chickens head, however a paint brush will just make the day a whole lot better. ( For the chicken too! )

Well, there kind of aren't, though. Nikon and Canon are competing for Full Frame territory, nobody else's messing around in this arena. I still haven't seen any Nikon footage that made me jump out of my seat.

What Canon would be saying is "Hey, if you want better you're gonna have to step up a bracket and get something that is better."

I also am not sure if it's as much of a cash cow as we filmmakers would like to believe. The money's always going to come from glass, not camera bodies, and they will continue to sell more of their many copies than any body they could conceive. Even if a 5D MKIII Came in at 799.99, you still need glass to use it, and more than likely you're going to buy more than one lens, but not more than one camera body.

That's just how I see it, anyway.

So far it looks pretty stout as a base from which to port over to something else. Jury's still kind of out until after tomorrow, once the color session's done with and the stuff we did today's screening on the 20ft that'll seal the deal for me. Again, I know Epic's gonna kill 'em all, but a direct comparison of GH2, C300, NEX-5, Sony Alpha, 7/5D, and these sweet crash cams should be another much-needed eye-opener.

I expected it to feel more like a toy, hands were pleasantly surprised.

Must say as well, the single Canon battery running over 4/5 hours (not really turning the camera on or off, either) was pretty inspiring. Jonathan Yi mentioned, in an interview about his experience with the C300, that he could run out with a pocket of batteries and CF cards and never have to worry for an entire day.

He was not exaggerating. Four 32GB CF Cards, three to four Canon batteries and some blackwrap would be all I need (aside from glass and MAYBE a tripod haha) to get it done. Impressive.

Oh, and how about that Camera Lock switch? Should come standard on EVERY camera from now on.

<<<I know just how the chicken feels working with a 5D >>>>>

LOL... Be the master of your Chicken!

It's a pretty big jump for most 5D owners especially in this economy.

You don't buy Canon for their glass. Even Canon reps admit that Nikon makes better glass. Canon glass is pretty useless without a body.

Yeah I didn't expect the build. I was very impressed. Lock option so no one can "F" up the system. Simple, however brilliant feature. No taping all the buttons down to prevent accidents.
That should be standard on all gear....

My Nikon glass never leaves me. Some of the best I've ever had is Nikon. My dads medium format glass was beautiful though. However that's medium format; different animal!

I shoot a lot with vintage (1960-1970s) Zeiss medium format glass - just beautiful organic and - what I call it - butter-sharp.
The point is, that you only use the sweet spot of the lens.

Provided it's not mucked up with moire and aliasing.

I'd like to see something at least *aproaching* 1080p resolution.

I want no aliasing/moire, better codec, and better low light and DR. Better resolution would be nice too, but it's not a big problem with the current Canon DSLRs (sub-par, but not a big problem)

Screw Canon if resolution will be anything below GH2.

Yeah, bottom line is more CPU (probably dual processors like the 7D, though that is probably the root of 7D overheat issues). Everything else pretty much flows from that. I'd also vote same sensor size, not smaller, but not bigger either.

no aliasing/moire may or may not require more CPU; what it definitely needs is a sensor with a faster readout (current APS-C: read-out time of 60ms, cut to 20ms by reading only 1/3 of the lines)
