5D replacement announcement next week

I was talking video mode, Canon DSLRs are far away from that 'point' considering video.

I've seen my stuff projected from Blu Ray on a 30' wide screen. Is it 4K, nope, but it holds up very well. Certainly wouldn't go to another camera just for more "resolution".

I shoot a lot with vintage (1960-1970s) Zeiss medium format glass - just beautiful organic and - what I call it - butter-sharp.
The point is, that you only use the sweet spot of the lens.

Frank, I love the look of them. Well built too, those lenses.. Medium format was a dream format. I look back at our family photos which a lot was shot in medium. I will look at the 35mm stuff and there just pictures, while the medium stuff is romantically elegant looking.

Does anyone have more details about the codec of the 1D-X? I guess/hope they implement something similar in the 5DIII

Resolution is highly overrated. You have to have "enough", but a point comes where it doesn't mean much anymore.

I think if you shoot a lot of closeups/dialogue scenes, the lower resolution will actually be of benefit since it hides some of the finer details like pores on your actors' face. Won't have to fuss so much with makeup. OTOH, if you want a nice wide landscape at f/11, higher resolution is better.

Indeed. A major part of digital filmmaking is getting rid of the TOO sharp "HD" look.

Over Sharpened and Resolute (or resolving detail) are two vastly different things.

You are so friggin' right! So often the perception of resolution is sharpness. Resolution adds a smooth organic detail effect. I like the look of a high resolution printed photo over an HD image put on and LCD monitor any day. Can't wait for 8K, but will be far happier with 4k than HD.

The Canon DSLR's have less detail, but they also have a fair amount of aliasing. It's a wash. The GH2 sharpness is more pleasing. Though it is still HD. I dislike HD in general though. Always have. It is the worst of both worlds.

GH2 actually resolves more than any of the Canon DSLRs, which is why it's more pleasing. There are some profiles that add too much sharpening, indeed. Reality right now is that you really aren't getting a really well resolved 1080 out of a large sensor unless you're paying more than 10K for it.

Barry's AF100 and FS100 test shows that even the FS100 isn't really doing much more than the AF100 in this arena, which was startling because it seemed so.

C300, F3 are the start to actually getting a well-resolved image.

Hence why I don't think the MKIII will be worth its entry price in the year 2012. I'm always game to be wrong, all for the better.

Let me know when you shoot with a camera that actually resolves more than 540 lines. xD Then tell me how overrated Resolution is.

By the way, if I remember right, for digital projection the lower limit of a good projection experience is around 800 lines. That's 260 lines the 5D's short.

Yeah but the 5D is Canons cash cow and primarily because of the video so I expect a bit more. Canon knows what we want fixed and they're not going to sell anywhere near as many of them if they don't fix it. There's plenty of other options now.

I doubt the 5D is a major part of Canons business. The Ixus series is probably a multiple of profit: easier to produce, easier to sell.
The 5D is maybe the camera that exceeded their expectations the most, when they stumbled into our film-scene. But it is still a niche-product.

The C300 is made for a totally different market; even in the Ef version.

I guess what people are getting at is the way that a camera goes from sharp to soft... edge sharpness... A nice smooth edge "rolloff" is what you get with the high end cameras.... The GH2, for all it's nice resolution, still can look harsh on the edges.... (not that I am moaning, for sub $1k!)

Completely dependent on glass (lens) and camera settings. With Panasonic lenses, definitely.

But, that's no different than shooting anything high end, either. You want ultra sharp, you're gonna shoot Ultra Primes or similar. You want smooth fall off, you're gonna shoot S4s or an Angenieux HR.

No other camera exceeded any expectations before like 5D2. RED ONE or EPIC or Scarlet included. We are speaking about expectations, not IQ :-)

I am prepping two narrative projects as of today. Both will be shot with this camera too. Even when there are other cameras out there. Everyone speak about this camera and want to use it. Even now, years later its introduction. No other camera had such tremendous success. DVX included.

I wouldn't pay $3500 for one, not unless it brought more to the table than what we are hearing. I actually wouldn't likely get anything in the next year. Pretty much resigned to getting another 12 months and a couple more projects out of the MK2.

4K cameras shouldn't even be in the resolution discussion. The 1080P of the GH2, vs 5DMK2 vs AF100 etc... resolution comparisons are comparing a Toyota Camry to a Nissan Sentra. This one accelerates a little better, this one gets slightly better mileage, this one has a higher top speed, but in general, eh... pretty close to the same thing. give or take. Then there are top end sports cars.... Well yeah, they are way better, and they cost 10X as much.
