5D replacement announcement next week

5D3_sideports.jpg

Current guesses (clockwise from top right): Headphone jack, combination A/V/USB jack (similar to GH2), HDMI jack, remote jack, flash sync jack, microphone jack.

I had this thought that's probably completely nonsensical:

If the 5D is the only Full Frame camera on the market and Canon owns it, there may be a chance that they actually deliver a mostly moire and aliasing free image because of that. You pretty much aren't using PL glass on a 5D, not enough of the good sets cover the sensor size.

It won't have all the pro junk that most results-driven shooters want, so it's not a strong competitor for C300's business in that regard.

And the price tag's a pretty strong one. 3500 (if that is the price)? Could mean something.

I guess we'll all know soon enough. But, note that it doesn't carry the "C" brand, either.

That's not a headphone jack. It is a new proprietary link called "horseshoe", and for $10,000 you can buy a connector which plugs into it. The only current supported option is the 1/8" headphone jack adapter.

Hi Kholi: The 5DM3 won't have a the "C" brand, but it might have a "PJ" brand, as in "photojournalist".

Canon might tailor the 5DM3's video capability to the needs of their PJ customers, many of whom need very good quality video & audio in addition to (of course) high-quality stills.

Most PJs would probably prefer to bring just one cam on assignment, not both a pro stills cam and a pro video cam. Likewise pro wedding shooters. And wildlife & adventure shooters.

Of course, indie filmmakers are welcome to use the new 5DM3 on certain budget-constrained shoots, too.

If this weird theory of mine is true, then the 5DM3 might prove to be a very solid _video_ camera in addition to its being a great stills cam. Actually, this weird theory also points toward the 5DM3 including 1080p60/50 in addition to 1080 HD 24p/25p/30p/60i/50i.

If the alleged $3,500 US list price for the 5DM3 isn't due to being bundled with a $1K US Canon lens, maybe the higher-than-expected body-only price is due to the extra electronics required to deliver very nice quality 1080p60?

We'll know soon enough.

It kinda feels (to me) like Canon have painted themselves into a corner.
It's safe to say that the image of the 5d MarkIII will NOT be superior than the C300. (I know image can be subjective and that the sensor size is different, blah, blah blah...but other than the sensor size and associated image differences associated with that....)

So, the DR can't be "better" than the 5d Mark II because the C300 is 12 stops. The 5d Mark II is 10 stops. (according to some sources)
So....I guess they can go to 11? Not much further they can go without "threatening" the C300.
How about low light? Could it be better than the C300? (DSLR comparison says ISO6400....even though it says ISO20,000...it's truly comparable to ISO6400) I guess they might go to ISO 6400 is have it clean enough to be usable. So...add one stop there. Again, they can't do much better without threatening the "higher" line of cams.

Now....I realize that we have the GH2 vs AF100 comparison all over again....one is a production tool, the other is a stills camera that shoots video. IQ speaks for its self.....so I guess we'll all see if that's what we're going to get:

5d Mark III = same IQ as C300 without proper controls?

A LA

GH2 = same IQ as AF100 without proper controls

Like I'm saying....it looks like they're kinda stuck and can't really "unleash" anything too CRAZY because it will threaten C300 sales. (NOW...that's NOT what I think...that's just what Canon appears to have been projecting by NOT including HDMI out for all this time....)

Anywho.....I'd love to see them unleash a CATEGORY BUSTER for sure!!!! We'll see what they've got up their sleeves. Hopefully they'll up the ante even more! Cheers!

It's not the C300 sales they have to worry about, it's the D800 sales. A lot of Nikon shooters bought 5Ds and might flip flop. If the C-DSLR doesn't show up at NAB then this is probably it for cine full frame DSLRs this year. The C-DSLR probably won't even be full frame.

You'd go far in the marketing game.

The other port is A/V OUT DIGITAL aka USB....no thunderbolt sadly.

Canon will sell a gazillion more 5DM3 cams than C300 cams. If 5DM3 customers want both a very competent stills cam _and_ a very competent video cam both in one body, Canon would be crazy not to deliver that if they can do so profitably.

Good points be made here. Along with their new L lenses, seems like a pretty good opportunity. Wish I could find my time machine.

They're very different animals sensor design wise. The C300 has much bigger photosites so it will theoretically be better in low light. The MKIII is rumoured to be 22 megapixels. It will all come down to how Canon processes the full frame image for 1080p output.

I have my eye on that IS 100mm macro L

My 5D has never had an AF lens mounted to it....Chasing 2 kids around I'm a focus pulling master!
