5D replacement announcement next week

Just to clarify, I'm just saying the Box Office IMO generally has stories ranging from competent to good standard. Whether ye think the standard is seriously lacking andbad, well that's cool too. As Cosimo Bullo said, that's for a discussion in the pub with beer :)

Most of my favourite films arent Box Office draws to be fair. Where's the Chungking Express or Shawshank in those money lists? Pah! I liked Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy's story too but it sure felt like another British Esteem kind of film. Oh, more silence and homosexual subtext. And I'm from the UK and I do get abit tired of such meticulously crafted films... >_< Give me Ghost Busters or Rocky or Harry Potter any day...

I agree. Character driven stories are much better than plot driven stories IMO.

However, my criteria is even harsher. Better be a good actor (most important!!) and it better be shot well, or I don't give a crap about the story and character. lol, I'd rather read a book. I believe Kholi was making this point earlier.

Edit: But then, how do we get a good actor? By having a good character based story for them! It'd be really cynical to think throwing money at them would solve most issues. but, catch 22 innit.

Oh ****, yeah, why are we talking about this - we were talking about DSLR form factors and resolution before!

glad we got all that out of the way.....back to pixels! I'll be happy when we're done with this 2nd gen DSLR hunt so I can focus on directing.

I'm serious though Squig man, if you believe your story is better than alot of the Hollywood standards out there, you should approach all the best and finest A-list talent you can find. That'll boost your budget up and you wouldn't need to count pennies on this 2nd DSLR wave. Buy/rent a few Alexas and such.* The story with how Mike Mills suddenly getting Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer for Beginners happens more often than ya think, especially because of good scripts.

* Probably easier to rent though, rent you write off as a tax expense, buy means its part of ya capital allowance and asset.

I'm certainly going to approach a few A-list actors for some key roles but I'm also keen on working with some fresh talent. I don't want to increase the budget because I will lose control over the film to a bunch of suits who don't give a damn about the story or my vision. The Alexa looks fantastic but it's out due to size and weight. The C300 will do the job if the new DSLRs can't. I'll certainly be using DSLRs for b-cam stuff though. I don't like renting, if it's worth using it's worth keeping and rental in Australia is very expensive.

Well. Okay, Assistant Producery Research mode on now...

I'm over-simplifying things but:

I'm not sure what the actual law is in Australia but say a film costing UP to £20 million in the UK we can get a tax relief for 25%. That's like £5m we can claim towards rental fees which would MORE than cover things like the Alexas and whatnot for the entire shooting time. However, that would NOT cover buying/keeping an Alexa.

So Australia does not actually have anything like this in place? :\

Yeah 40% tax rebate on local production costs. Government film funding is also available up to $2.5 million but there's a lot of red tape so I'm looking more to private investment.

Ah I see. So possibly using the rebates on other film production costs, and using the private investment for buying a C300 or whatever... cool cool.

Yeah red tapes a *****, it's mostly alot of waiting around...

2 more days til the '5D replacement announcement' :D

Yeah I just don't have the patience to deal with the bureaucracy. They have some stupid guidelines like you must have a writer, director, and producer trio. Which is like saying nobody in this country could ever possibly be talented enough to write, direct, and produce a film. Imagine if Kubrick and Coppola were Australian!

I've never really seen finance as being a major problem. Writing a great script and getting great performances is the hard part. Build it and they will come.

Bought a GH1, then another GH1, then a 7D, then a GH2, then another GH2.

I don't think I should be classified as "close-minded". I've tried. I tried hard. I tried to follow where everyone else seemed to want to go.

Didn't like it. Still don't like it. I think the GH2 is far away the best of the bunch, but even then, well... there's one part of your post that I'm in 100% agreement with, which is:

Right. Which is why I have a GH2. I can use it for those rare occasions where that matters. But for the other 98% of the time, I have the right tool for the job too. Best of both worlds.

Barry, I in no way meant to apply the "close-minded" comment towards you, I know it may have came off that way since I quoted your post in my comments so I apologize but again this was not aimed towards you or anyone specifically in this thread. I was just generalizing about a lot of the naysayers dismissing these cameras and who refuse to even try them based on the numbers/specs.. cough cough REDUSER elitist...

I'm sure you have more experience with a lot of these cameras in you're pinky finger than I have in all my years working so I respect you're opinion and know you have tried these cameras and I understand you're reasoning for not wanting to work with them.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Canonrumors have revised the announcement date to March 2nd......they're sure this time. :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was a Rebel T4i/650D on the 28th and shows no moire/mush/softness. Canon profit a lot more from the consumer line like the Rebel series than 5d anyway...

As Barry said, the ergonomics and form factor are the crippling factors for it to not eat away at their professional DSLR and camcorder lines.

Just make sure to keep very clear records, and what ever you do DONT, inflate costs to try to get a bigger rebate. Their cracking down in the states, and looking over every cost to make sure it isn't bs. Infact I know a guy thats doing time as we speak for this, his lawyer is trying like hell to get him out of jail, but the judge will not budge. Thats whay I say, "anyone in this position needs to be extra carful" just a heads up:)

Anthony, Kholi is young but has intelligent remarks... and talent. You should take him seriously. I would. And believe me, he's the best for your Arizona's shooting :-)

I am surprised you actually agree with me on those two. Seriously. lol
