5D MKIII specs

Okay, I'm also feeling sort of stunned. Been going back and forth on that beach shot of Phil's from ungraded to graded and sharpened, and I really cannot believe the detail being "pulled out" of that thing. Back and forth at 200% and I sort of can't believe my eyes...

So do all images start this soft in camera, and then before they're outputted they're sharpened in some way that's not called sharpening? Our RED was always sharp as a tack at 1080, and yet I usually used 4k HD processed with a mode Graham touted for its sharpnesss....

And with this good news in mind, will this become the norm? I mean if this is the actual image coming from the cam, hell yes, I'd rather sharpen it myself in the best possible way than have some Canon engineer decide what the best sharpening is. Give me an image to work with... and so it seems the 5d3 is... Much to think about.

NAB is almost always a disappointment, by the way.

Agreed. And KahL dude :P Strange, but you suddenly decided that the footage of the 5D3 is so good after seeing dustylense's footage... despite having a heated argument with jcs (who previously released footage with greater potential for info with his car, bricks, and chart examples :P )

Geez I honestly don't think me and Kholi were that stubborn or unreasonable on our opinion on its video quality originally or now even.

Looking forward to NAB... kinda oh god the forum and rumour mill page addiction is getting too strong...

I'm not stubborn, just spoiled to all hell and back. Me from 2007 would've been ecstatic to have a 5D MKIII. I think we're all spoiled to certain degrees, the DVX100 was enough then, Cellphones are enough now.

Has nothing to do with the GH2 or anything like that even, just once you go to that place you don't want to go back.

I couldn't imagine trying to sharpen every cut in a feature film, let alone a short film.

Yeah, NAB will be interesting. But I'm starting to ponder this. Look what ML did to the 5dmk2. What are the possibilities of the mk3 after those guys dive into it?

I think if VK got ahold of an MK3 then I'd probably buy one. I didn't like the GH2 before he got to it, either.

I'm actually not so sure I agree with that sentiment anymore, man.

Remember, I was right along with you on MKIII disappointment train. With money in hand to purchase a GH2...remember, not even more than several pages ago this was for me. Then I saw some of dustylense's footage which COMPLETELY changed my course of thought and now even more so w/ Bloom's review.

I saw the same footage, it wasn't bad. Just not enough to sell me when I know a side by side would've shown how the sharpening still isn't cutting it. That's just me, though, and I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else mind you! I only chimed in about the "masking" thing, because that's a little far-fetched. A way to illustrate that was pointing out a comparison, maybe there was a better way, though.
I mean, if it's not your cup of tea, then totally understandable. But, I can now see that the situation ISN'T a hoax after all. That is, of course, if all of these images are in fact from the MKIII and not a C300 model.

I did say it's making people happy, and that's all that matters. I've no brand loyalty: I'll jump ship on a company faster than a flaming stowaway. Dusty's footage, Phillip's footage, it illustrates a lot of great things about the MKIII, but none of them (mandatory disclaimer: to me) the ability to net and retain detail at this point in time is not one of those standout features.

And, it probably shouldn't be, not with their other products shipping or, again, right around the corner. Which is why I responded to you, not to trash any camera or any image (please re-read this statement many times if you think otherwise.)

End of the day? I'll shoot Epic if I can't find something I like and that's the end of the story for me. But, I enjoy trying different formats and exploring different looks, hence why I like and crave a clear and clean, resolute full frame image. Closest I can get is APS-H(5K) frames from Epic, but that's still not the look.

That very well could unlock the key to a treasure chest of more quality.... As for NAB, it should be quite interesting.

There WAS a comparison, a direct one right in Bloom's review. That's why it was said that you should not only view it, but download the file off of Vimeo to see it in full clarity.
Now if you've done all of the above and still don't see the difference, well then.....don't know what to tell ya.

dustylense re: BH shoot- sure; weekends are best.

re: sharpening and getting an idea across- repetition. Note in Bloom's video- he could hardly believe it worked (glad he gave it a shot). Also, I think music helps with perceived image quality . If you have any 3D glasses handy, this is perhaps more entertaining than those test shots (its in 3-DDD):

I agree with Kholi. I've tried the Mark III and liked it, am selling both my 7D and Mark II for it, but in no way its on the same ballpark of the Epic. The Mark III produces stunning results and for broadcast TVC's, it is a "game changer" (again) since it corrects the moiré and aliasing problems. Just don't expect it to beat a Scarlet and Epic in both Detail and dynamic range. In low light, however, absolutely.

A comparison with the C300, side by side, shooting the same thing. Not a comparison of sharpening on and sharpening off. I hope that clarifies what I meant, sorry for the confusion.

Oh Hai Sergio. You came out of the woodwork!

=[ It's sad how Epic and Scarlet perform in low light... But, still plenty adequate for a 1080 showcase me thinks.

All I can say is I'm 1000% satisfied with my Mk3 purchase. I'm already looking at booking a vacation to Europe with the camera before it burns down.

What is it about comicon chicks that make me sweat? Is is that they have a nerd streak in them? Or are they just on permanent Halloween?

The C300 is certainly higher resolution- those wide nature shots would look spectacular on the C300. Up close with narrow DOF and people's faces- that would be an interesting comparison with the 5D3.

Re: audio performance on the 5D3: it is still necessary to set volume low (I used 1 click above 0), then use a hot enough signal to hit -12dB. I tested with the G3 wireless receiver and transmitter fed with a Rode NTG-2 on battery. Also tested with a Sound Devices USB Pre 2 with USB battery (OK for location shoots but a bit complex for a moving camera) fed with a Shure SM7B and MLXR144 ribbon (L & R channels). Sounded very quiet with the NTG-2 over wireless- pro quality. The dynamic mics sounded excellent too, though by nature they aren't super quiet (easily fixed in post, though). In summary, didn't sound any better or worse than the 5D2. Headphone monitoring was nice, however there is no headphone volume (tested with Sony MDR7506- was loud enough).

Why the need for headphone volume if you're adjusting the input mic volume? What you hear is what you get. Pretty sure Canon made it that way and with the meters to read confidence from. Just be glad for internal monitoring. For set up controlled shooting, stick with dual sound anyway. In fact, hire a sound guy if you can. It's not just this microphone is good and that ones cold. Go stand in a recording studio and watch the tech set up the mic for the guitar amp on the big ole' sound board. Then, he'll dial in the piano, the bass amp feed, the 8 mics on the drums. Takes days for them to set this up.... Point is, you can make a $10,000 mic sound like crap if you don't know what you're doing. But you can also make a $100 mic sound like a $1500 mic if you do know what you're doing.
I don't fully understand sound science for recording. I play guitar and can warm my fender or tell my guild is cold in that or this amp. For me, if it's a job and the budget allows, I call up a sound dude.
I should just take my mixer and recorders out with no cameras at least twice a month and just record sound in different environments.

I personally don't mind the sharpening in post. It does suck that it NEEDS to be done, but knowing that the codec shows gorgeous results after being applied, well.....so yeah, I guess I'm not getting a GH2 after all *sighs*
Ah well, MKIII it is :)

hehe, flopper.

I reckon when Hunter gets back with some tasty peeper fodder Kholi might flip too.

Why not? every cut gets graded and if it's what it takes to get awesome VistaVision then so be it. Sure it's a lot of work but if it's worth the effort.

Been auditioning all afternoon. Looks like I found the male lead for my feature

Hehe true, Kholi, but from someone that used an HVX200 and other 1/3 cameras for many years, the Epic/Scarlet still is an improvement, no doubt! Only in very, very extreme situations will the Epic/Scarlet not work for most productions... But I'm really loving the camera so far. Excellent design, form factor, incredible frame rates and absolutely love how it handles the subtle transitions of highlights and shadows. Having said that, my 5D MK II is for sale and will purchase a MKIII in a very near future- its a different camera to do different things! :)
