5D MKIII specs

What's the best adapter?

leitax.com they have no equal! They screw over the original mount...rock solid. I have them on all my leicas and one of my nikkors....I hate those clip on adapters, even the more expensive one's used to have some play in them.

David @ leitax is a really friendly guy and really helpful. The adapters aren't super cheap but they're well worth it. He makes adapters for a lot of other mounts too.

OMG! We're building consensus. I do so love it when we all see the world through the same lens. It's almost been magical to see the textbook written on this cam over the last few days. It's been a roller coaster, love it, hate it, love it, hate it LOVE IT! I'm exhausted.

Thanks for your footage, Dusty. My heart was stirred as I watched it and saw what this cam can achieve. Thanks also to JCS for all the work he's done with sharpening. As a still photographer I wanted to love this cam for stills, and it's a huge improvement in that area no doubt, but I was tentative about the cinema possibilities with the 5DIII, but it looks like that has been resolved as well.

Here's the I-only vs. IPB detail test with post sharpening:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTEV6_os4gY&hd=1
To my eyes, IPB has more detail/information. In some areas I-only can look sharper, however I suspect that's due to macroblock edge aliasing. Would be good to know if others replicate these findings with respect to I-only and IPB quality.

Note the first few seconds of the first couple scenes are static. They are downsampled still frames, showing what should be possible with the lens and camera to provide max detail. This also shows the scene was in focus.

Sounds like the quality issues of the 5D3 are now understood (and what to do to make it look good); time to get back to finishing the script and shooting the movie.

Just checked that out in 1080P. At the 34 second mark, you see how the image should look. There's no reason the video off this sensor going through the latest digics should not be doing the same. However it gets quite mushy when it snaps from still's to video mode. After 4 years, this should have been the jump up from the 5DMII. Thanks for sharing John.

Just imagine how it will look if the magic lantern boys can do a CBR intra 150Mbit/s hack! (they shouldn't have to though that's Canons job) That would be the next best thing to RAW video. The sensor is quite clearly amazing! This camera could not have come at a better time for me. And yeah respect to jcs and dustylense for doing the groundwork. I feel like I did in 1977 in a dark cinema listening to a John Williams classical theme watching text scrolling across a big screen. Nobody has an excuses now...write that screenplay! Mine's good to go.

Respect to Kholi to for all his past work...bit slo on the take this time bro but I know you'll catch on fast. Kholi has always hassled me to write and that's what I've been focusing on the last couple of years. I'm starting to sound like I'm accepting an oscar so I'll shut up now.

It's a shame Nikon haven't followed Canons lead....I still like their colours better and the D800 looks like it has more dynamic range but the bottom line is you can't fix moire and aliasing in post.

If magic lantern guys do that, then there's a good chance this image could happen from the 5DMIII. Have they gotten one yet, or expressed that they plan on hacking the 5DMIII?

PAPA, Come on now. I rescale stills for a living. You're really asking too much. If you could obtain detail like that in any motion camera, why the need for 4K then? Especially in a camera that is designed stills priority. Face it, for $3500 if you were to get an image like that, think about all the companies that would hand out immediate layoffs. Plus, think about what he JCS did. He took a high resolution still, processed it in photoshop (or the like) resized it, then saved it as a jpeg. if the still image was a RAW processed CR2, all the worse. I know I know. A still jpeg is 15mb's on the Mk3! Not when you open it in photoshop! How are you gonna pack that process and quality into a camera and charge $3500? Especially when in HDR still mode high jpeg capture, it's taking the camera about 5 secs to read, process, and merge the file while locking up the camera (its amazing, yes). 5 secs is how many frames at 30p? 150. The camera, based of a 15 mega"BYTE" jpeg would have to record 450 mega"BYTEs" per second and still process that info into 1080P 1920x1080 files? For 1 second of video. SIGN ME UP for $3500 if you make that camera. I'd sell my car for 6 of them and walk to jobs.

I just posted this on the magic lantern dev forum-

"The MKIII sensor is the ducks nuts. It appears to be downscaling to 1080p not lineskipping, so around 900-1000 lines of detail is there in the IPB file. It's just a bit soft from the downscaling but sharpens up nicely in post. I just looked at a 3200 ISO prores file and I'm speechless! The ALL-I codec implementation however is a piece of sh.. If AJ and co can crack it and make CBR 150Mbit/s+ work we'll have a true VistaVision cine camera....Star Wars baby! I have new hope."

They don't have a link for MKIII donations yet. AJ asked for donations for a MKII a while ago and the money came through in a few days and he has already put up a few beta's of the unified hack. As soon as Alex shows an interest in working on the MKIII I'll post the donation link....hell I'll run down the street naked for clean HDMI out!

I love those guys. I did some testing with the magic lantern VBR codec and suggested they change it to CBR and in no time they did it and it was totally reliable unlike the VBR that constantly spat the dummy.

HOWEVER.... In the camera you can set up a Jpeg to shoot at 1920x1280. So... To test the cameras performance of possibility, you need to set it up with that jpeg size BUT shoot at a 1/60th (30p) or 1/50th (24p). No shooting at 1/250th! Try it. If you can get the magic lantern guys tapping that, you might have something. I just did it and the image is yes more resolute but the grain is sick! Its 508kbits stored and 7 megabytes opened in PS. Still would take some serious power though.

Well if digic 5 is downscaling to 1080p as I suspect then it has a lot of power. The big bottleneck is the flash media and buffer. Too bad they didn't go with XQD media....but if the HDMI out can be enabled who knows what kind of IQ can be achieved.

Having seen what Canon is capable of doing behind the scene's for many years. I clearly know what they can do. It's not that they can't, it's they won't. There segmenting their market for future cameras to come. That's the hard truth of having many lines of products. As to 4K. 2K at that quality wouldn't negate 4K. 4K+ is in a whole other game. There should be no limits set to video, as there are no limits set for stills. Just imagine if digital stayed in the area of 1200+1600 as they were 12 years ago. I feel video should go as high as it can. Push it tell it breaks... The 5DMIII is a great camera, as well the D800 is for what they can do. However, it's really no big deal, since what's to come over the next 12 months is going to put the right product/performance that many desire at a price that will make sense for those wiling to pay for it.

It will interesting what they can do, if they do. If they could stretch out the technology of the 5DMII, imagine what they might be able to do with the 5DMIII with it's newer chips.

OK.

After studying this thread and having a long play with the 5D3 personally I can honestly say... I'm not that interested in it again. The back and for-thing was hilarious, but definitely I can conclusively say a no go for me now.

*phew* I can move on with other things.

about raw recoding....
c300 with cineform RAW....
for best quality 1080p 3.5:1 bitrates are around 120-160 mbits ...
and we get 12 bit 444...

OK.

You want my personal reasons Squig?

For my stills work, I'm perfectly content with the 5D2 and 550D cameras.

The only thing that peaked my interest was the potential for true resolved 1080p video. This would cost me about £3000 to upgrade. However, for just video alone that's ridiculous buyer's itch, for 2 reasons:

1) I already have access to a hacked GH2, which I personally find still looks better. The grain quality is just really nice and I never think it looks too soft. Whereas with the 5D3, I'd always have to sharpen. Even then it introduces a grain quality I don't like, and some of the sharpening I've done and what I've seen still looks kind of shaky. Thank you jcs for showing me that it does seem to resolve higher than 720p though!

2) For that £3000 upgrade for simply videos, I can rent Epics and Alexas or buy an FS100 - geez.

Try a pixel radius of 0.3, as that is what I have found to be optimal with still images of around HD resolution. For optimal sharpening I have found the smaller resolution of the file you are applying it to, the smaller the pixel radius should be. One thing you need to watch with sharpening is if the image has small areas of highlights close to clipping, such as reflections of hair etc. If there are these little glittery bits the sharpening will turn ugly. So with stills I always apply the sharpening to a fairly flat image before any other processing making sure there is a bit of room at the highlight end, and then do tonal adjustments afterwards. I'm not sure if this is any help, and ignore it if it isn't. This is only as regards stills. However I have done a lot of experimentation on how to apply aggressive sharpening, without it looking oversharpened. I need this because my high magnification stills macros have a lot of diffraction softening at small apertures. What is surprising is that if you get the lighting and the workflow right, you can apply far more sharpening than you think without it looking over-sharpened. However the key thing is to avoid those little glittery blown highlights because they make it look ugly.

Papa, you're answering in your own statement. to quote "since what's to come over the next 12 months is going to put the right product/performance that many desire at a price". ANd 12 months after that? And twelve more? How would these companies stay in business if they developed that camera? What if Canon released a 4k raw camera in a smaller C300 camera for $4500? What happens to RED? Sony has to follow, then Panny and Nikon. These guys have to stay in business. The gh2 hack proves that you can get 170mbit AVCHD. Why not straight from the manufacture then? Or at least the option? Because is would set the marketplace out of tune. A 4k raw video Canon rebel would make the RED a great paperweight. Agree? So if big Corps gave US what WE want now, they have no future road map, or at least a very limited one. If RED didn't exist, what do you think the C300 would cost? I would say $60,000.
We're getting there. But so was the DVX100. Look at us now. Patience young Jedi....The tech is there, they just need us to consume a few more. But without that consume, that tech wouldn't be there because they wouldn't have the money to develop it. Embrace what we have already. It's quite nice living right now if you like cameras.

I'll match my 6400 ISO to your 1250 ISO and up you a still photograph. Make it 6 stills taken in 1 second raw with 61 points for AF while writing to 2 cards and with a monitor I can judge fairly. I too have the mk2. I had the 1ds, 1dsmk2, 1dsmk3, and the 5d. This mk3 is better than all off them combined.

Ok cool so it's a cashflow justification issue due to it only being an incremental improvement on your current setup. Hey I know man, I can barely scrape up the money for one. I just had a talk to the Mrs "Don't spend any money this month. No new school dress for the kid, I gotta get a new camera, I gotta pay for actresses airfare, I gotta hire a car. $33 for school photo's...wtf, they're always out of focus!...and get cheap lunches."

The thing is this cameras is really critical for me right now and will feed my kids for the next few years...if that isn't the case for you guys don't waste your money, the MKII and GH2 are really cool for a lot of stuff. Content is still king and always will be. Clients will say otherwise though.
