Nice work Christoper (dustylense)! I would guess Tonalizer is doing a convolution sharpen if you aren't getting any halos when you crank it up high. If its some form of Unsharp Mask- you'll get halos at high levels (though it's less if you use a small radius). A convolution sharp will get grainy at high levels, exposing any artifacts as well.
Shot some wide shots at 24mm (24-105 kit lens) outside in the street with trees, grass, asphalt, signs. I compared IPB to I-frame and still (scaled down). Based on the stills, there's a bit more detail that could be captured (in some cases, quite a bit). When switching between IBP and I-only, there is a change in colorspace (I-only is brighter or different gamma, perhaps color too). This could also be an NLE issue (PPro does special gamma based on file type (found this info in an XML config file)). I verified the "noise" issue with I-only at low ISO (100, 160, 320). Not sure it's just low ISO, though. The noise looks like aliasing on the edge of a DCT macroblock. This is easier to see after extreme sharpening. I can sharpen IPB to the point of looking like a GH2, however it also matches the GH2's aliasing. When sharping I-only at the same level, there are many artifacts. If I lower the sharpen value for I-only to prevent artifacts, it doesn't look as sharp as sharpened IBP. I'll test a clip in FCPX to see if the I-only issue exists there as well. It looks like a lot of detail is lost in compression- if I-only can be fixed+improved, more detail appears to be available.
Also note that good results can be obtaining using both a convolution and Unsharp Mask filter in post. You can convolution sharpen to bring out fine details (high frequency), and Unsharp Mask to bring out mid-frequency details. Finally, you can use a very large Unsharp Mask size to do Local Contrast Enhancement.
I tended to use Unsharpen Mask often, but at minor levels. Never noticed the Convolution Sharpen till just now in Premiere. I'll give it a go!
Yeah. That would have been a great option. Maybe the Rebel will trickle this tech? Rick, send me your e-mail so I can send you the prores shorter version.
There a free version http://irudis.com/Products/TonalizerVFXLITE.aspx it has a details slider instead of detail sharpener like the pro version. Is it just the detail sharpener you're using dustylense?
OH SNAP! ANother 100 pages! Actually, it would be a GREAT TOPIC! In fact, whoever writes the best video sharpening plug-in that works in most NLE's will be a rich man because of this camera (JCS, Hint hint.....)Now we move onto "Convolution Wars - the battle of the sharpeners". In episode 2 we expose the myth that sharpening is more important than content.
Yes, the free version won't do it. I got lucky before they jacked the price. Maybe a little pitchfork protest could get them to drop the price of the plugin?
Sent!
I've looked at our footage A LOT on Vimeo and YouTube when we shot with the 7D exclusively so I am VERY familiar with the output of the camera. Also, I've done A LOT of compositing, 3D animation work, etc with 7D footage. I'll put those eye-balls in and look at the prores. (we work in prores also).

Just please, for the love of all things living, no nose grease left on the monitor please. I could only imagine having to clean theatre 8's screen after a few of you visited it.

So I've looked at the footage, and I can honestly say, if you can't see the improvement to older footage, I don't know what to say to you. In my opinion, the image looks sharper with REAL detail and not aliased detail that makes it look like it is sharper than it really is. It's more than just contrast difference because I can see detail in the skin that I NEVER see with the 7D. I can see whites in lines where normally they are PLAGUED by red/blue chroma.
If I was to give one criticism of the camera, I don't think it does a great job in the blurry areas with the codec. I feel I can see some macroblocking like artifacts in those areas.
And the noise at this ISO, wow. I fought noise with the 7D even at ISO1000 range.
And I was looking VERY close on my MacBookPro 17 with 1920x1200 screen.
And I think it pretty much goes without saying, I am one of the BIGGEST pixel peepers around.![]()
LOL, it't why I warned you to not leave nose grease on the screen. You have an Apple TV Rick? I got the 1080 version, hooked that bad boy up to my 73in and was blown away!
Nope, I have a mac mini hooked up to my projector. But I use my laptop as the true 'break the footage' test. The gamma is default so I can make sure our web videos look good with people using default settings so if footage is gonna fall apart, this is the system that does it for me!
