5D MKIII specs

In addition to the usual suspects (Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, and RED), I wouldn't be surprised if JVC (cough!) has a large-ish sensor camcorder coming.

JVC is being all silly & distracted with their tiny-sensor 4K camcorder, which is more about the future than the near-term. But if they can acquire a APS-C or larger sensor from another company, they might just deliver a compelling camcorder with it, and soon. True 1080p, decent codec, relatively low price. They've done similar in the past.

Unfortunately for JVC it sometimes seems like whenever they get it right, their moment in the sun is just that: A moment. Then the other cam companies step in with new, better hotness and JVC recedes from view again.

NAB is just a few weeks away ...
They do http://cinetechnews.com/2012/01/24/jvc-4k-interchangeable-lens-camera/

I never thought the Canon XHA1 was that sharp to begin with. And the Canon hv20 is not considerably sharper than the 7d. And that camera was praised for it's look just a couple of years ago. Sony cams before the EX1 were not that sharp either like the V1 or Z1. They had a bunch of extra sharpening added in. They actually look quite bad nowadays. Even the new ones, like the Z5 is even quite bad when one has gotten used to DSLR footage. Which is quite funny. I was blown away how horrible they looked after a long time with DSLR shooting. No dynamic range, horrible sharpening artifacts and huge amounts of noise. No aliasing was cool though.

The only real thing that has spoiled people is apparently the GH2 ;)

i really do have to look into the GH2 or whatever succeeds it. On the subject of absolute sharpness. One little point. It's not all that important to the narrative.
When was the last time that you watched a movie on the big screen and said to yourself, "Ouch! That CU of the villains was just wasn't so perfectly sharp" or whatever?
Moire, Jello Effect, Color Key ability, smooth zoom, follow focus,Clean compression or uncompressed out- are what make the difference to me. How close are these cameras to meeting my criteria:
Nikon D800
5D MKIII
Panasonic G2

The only real thing that has spoiled people is apparently the GH2 ;)
And yet someone stated that the much ballyhooed sharpness of the GH2 is merely a perceived edge resolution via bumped up contrast trick. That would make Color Key bad with this camera.
Is that a statement shared by others that know this camera? I have not touched it.

It’s an exaggeration by some folks. The issue of false detail really only happens with certain Panasonic lenses that purposely sharpens the image as a result of lens correction on their wide angle lenses.
But the “little cam that could”, regardless of how much false sharpness shows up, actually resolves higher than all the other DSLRs and some higher end camcorders. It ends up having an uber sharp look which contributes to that “video-like” look. BUT ..put on some manual lenses…problem solved.

Every frame out of hacked GH2 is like a JPEG still downscaled to 1080.

There is nothing "perceived" about that.

It really is poor man's RED at 1080 resolution wise. :)

I absolutely loved my HVX200a w/Letus Extreme and Nikon AIS combo. The aesthetic quality of the image was absolutely beautiful for me and I never minded the lack of sharpness. However the light weight, simplicity, and lack of needing to over come the light loss, drew me away from the HVX/Letus rig and into the Canon 5D camp, but man was I nervous about the aliasing and moire issues... I am very happy that Canon has addressed these issues... would I like more, sure, but I'm happy, I'll put the 5DMKIII to work right away and sell my 5DMIIs. I like the FF of the Canon, but if Panasonic decided to come out with an S35 with the HVX color and aesthetic quality and 4:2:2, I'd be all over it. I know people will point out the AF100, but I have SLR FF lenses and don't want to deal with the 2x field of view shift on my lenses and I'm not feeling like dropping money on a new set of lenses.

Also, I never really used it much, bought a Canon HV200 as a 4th camera for whatever and I hated it, LOL. I still have it as a VCR for all my old minDV tapes, if I ever need to go back, never do, but just in case.

The gh2 is much harder to get a clean key with than say the t3i. I dont know why, but just my experience. Although software may have something to do with that. It may be the Canon plays nicer with Adobe ultra than Pani. Thats not to say you can't get a nice clean key with the gh2, I have seen some really nice stuff. I just haven't figured it out myself yet. The gh2, needed a close to perfect lit green screen, as where the Canon keys out with a not so good lit screen. Again, I dont know why.

It's all perception man, the 5dmk3 resolves 4k you just can't see it :)

Thanks fellow HV20 alum ;) ! Any leads to what I need to put together a kit of the GH2 and lenses? I've held off the DSLR thing a long time, I have an event in July that would be a good test, where do i go for still/video set up, lenses+camera and do I need a back-up body?

I just hope Canon isn't doing some trickery with a hobbled 5dmk3 resolving invisible 4k only to roll out a patch at an additional cost that releases the 4K goodness. Now THAT would be harsh.

yeah and the 4k camera won't cost only $3,5k for sure!

Can anyone suggest a good lens for the new 5Dmark II under $500? I usually use a 28mm prime on my 60d and I really like the field of view...

Thanks

A 28mm on a 60D would be slightly under a 50mm on full frame. Grab either the Sigma 50mm f1.4, or save a few more bucks (recommended) and grab the Zeiss 50mm f1.4. You will thank me later.

If you want something a little wider, grab the Samyang/ Rokinon 35mm f1.4.

I found the Zeiss used/refurbished on ebay for 560. That's a damn good deal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZEISS-50MM-F-1-4-ZE-PLANAR-T-CANON-EF-MOUNT-LENS-USED-DEMO-/190647534781?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item2c637a84bd

There is also the rumored 40mm pancake, which is supposed to be rather inexpensive. But who knows when that will show up.
