5D MKIII specs

Canon (like Sony) has been on a tear lately, coming out with new models with increasing frequency ... just wait a few weeks or months for the next hotness

:) :) :) :) :) :)

as barry said and I agree, the video on the 5d3 is not the main concern for the camera - this is incredible news for us
because then 7d2, 70d, t4i should (fingers crossed) all roll out with the same video features. Exciting times

I was thinking the same thing myself. How long did it take for the 7D to appear after the MkII's release?

They didn't worry about that on previous releases or the C300 release. Canon likes to control, so they would rather have great 1080P out first before someone uploads their cat sleeping in a shoebox in the closet shot in automatic mode. You know what I mean. Something else is at play IMO..

Wise words, Michael. Someone told me some years ago, you were a Canon man, granted the fact you and Elton were used to post anything related to Canon in the 1st hand. BTW, where's Barlow? I've never seen him here lately. What's up with him? Still in Salt Lake City? One of these days, we are even able to likely see him to pop up some 5Dx stuff of his daughter's wedding... LOL We're becoming old! : D But once there's no wedding footage to see yet, no hassle to report about ;)

With the time, it was not hard and I actually was able and quick ;) to get you are as much indie as a Kholi for example, who joined the party later but at the most productive and free side of the road :-)

They're already popping up! : D

EDIT -- There are obvious ISO differences, huge distance and the focus on 5DII just looks like accurate! ;) I bet there's distinct glass in-between :P

Funny when the C300 was announced we had 1080P short films to look at to see how it performed. We could head over to Paramount to see it, at least at my location. Even the 5DMII had some 1080P clips to see in the beginning. The 5DMIII gets announced and all there is are 720P stuff- and quite weak at that ( well one wasn't bad- just 720P blah ).

Probably because once you saw C300 1080p (which is actually 1080p, while most DSLRs are somewhere around 540 to 700 lines of rez) everything else looks a bit soft they don´t even bother about pushing video in the DSLRs. And let´s be honest, for 90% of youtube-viewers 720p is plenty.....
Once the new C-DSLR with 4K comes out....then they will show 4K and 1080p at launch for sure.

Thanks HHL.

It is looking like it is hitting a low light sweet spot. My only wish for the 5dmk3, is for it to do crop modes for video, like nikon. I would shoot f2 on APSC, but not on a FF35 sensor camera. Okay, I would.

This is sad, but true. Bandwidth is a b.

EDIT - referring more to all the compression and lack of resolution most often found in web video.

You can see that noise reduction has added some smoothing to the image, but well worth the trade off?

Remember Nat Geo and Discovery are still acquiring the majority of their footage with the 720 varicam (actually recording 960x720), and with DVCPRO as the codec, a very clunky old codec indeed. So 720 is still, in fact, an industry standard. And both the above networks have shown a real reluctance to embracing 4k footage of any kind. They'll deal with RED footage if you don't make a big deal out of it.

Yes, but only if they are using the same glass... Something to still be confirmed...
Haha, true. Something I never would've done to others if I was doing the test, but yes, we do not know they're methods. Agreed! =)

Well I can tell you a friend of mine was shooting for a BBC nature-documentary which was to be broadcast in 4 shows. (high-class, 12 months shoot all over the globe) and he was shooting RED with a crew of 3; in the desert, in strip-clubs, on the Empire stat building...you name it. and the other 3 shows got produced on HDCam and Varicam. When he got back he got booked for more while the others had to re-shoot big chunks.

Mind you I am not a RED guy at all. IMO 4K is overhyped by....well....RED. But on the top level 1080p is slowly setting in as the standard. Of course content is everything and at home on my 720p Panasonic 42" Plasma everything shot in 720p and 1080p looks gorgeous enough. I personally don´t need a the latest OLEDfullHD mamba-jamba at all when I watch a film/clip with a good script. But my clients see the differences between an EX1 (which is plenty sharp), 7D/5D and F3. And usually they opt for the better, because the pricediffernece in a production is actually not as big as the mere sales price for the naked cams makes it look.

A 5D is actually not that cheap when you calculate the frankenrig to it. The audio-control in the MKIII is useless in a "real" production, because the plug and pre-amp are not good enough. Heck, even on the C300 with its two channels you need a audio-guy to record 4 channels. So there is more to the story than what you pay at best-buy and the specs on paper.

For many the 5DMKIIIwill be more they ever need, my 7D is able to produce better images than I can dream of. The beauty is the limitations become less and less. With Act of Valor being so big now I can see a lot of indie-movies shot on 5Ds of all flavors, because it is the best example the end consumer of our films care only about thing: CONTENT/STORY.

The quality at iso 12800 looks comparable to the C300 in terms of sensitivity... sure, there's some NR but not too much.
