5D MKIII specs

DPreview always seems to be on top of it. Good stuff

EDIT: after reading, I think we'll need to wait for a bit more info

I am bummed! - From the DPReview article:

"The video output specifications are essentially unchanged in terms of resolution and framerate (1080p30 maximum), but Canon says the processing is improved to minimise moiré and other artefacts, and has included the higher quality All-I and IPB interframe compression options introduced with the EOS-1D X. What you don't get though, is the uncompressed output over HDMI seen in the latest Nikon models."

Boo Hiss...

950gsm It put on some weight!

"Although at first glance the video specifications of the 5D Mark III might look very similar to those of the 5D II, the results should be greatly improved. From our limited use, the new sensor shows much less of the rolling-shutter effect that was very apparent with fast movement on the Mark II. The more powerful Digic 5+ processor is also able to reduce moire artifacts in videos, giving cleaner output.
The Mark III also features the same, more sophisticated video encoding options that appeared on the 1D X, most notably the 'All-I' compression option, in which each frame is treated independently, rather than trying to identify and compress common areas for neighboring frames. This means higher playback quality and easier editing, though at the cost of larger file sizes (you'll fit 22 minutes of All-I footage on a 16GB card, rather than the 64 with the alternative IPB compression). The camera is also happy to record for its maximum 29:59 minutes without overheating risks in normal working temperatures and can split a single clip across multiple files so that it isn't impeded by the 4GB file limit of the FAT 32 file system."

Yep. Let's hope that Nikon pushes that Tech down stream so that we can all PUNISH Canon for that decision. I'd love nothing more than to see Nikon "get it right" again and have Full Uncompressed HDMI out (clean) on the D7000 successor and even the D5100 successor. Canon is still "protecting" their video cams....no problem.....let's just hope that Nikon gets other stuff right so that we can all write checks to them and punish Canon for their non-sense decision.

Indeed....Boo Hiss...

Here is more on the video format:
  • 1080p: 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30fps (actually 29.97fps)
  • 1080p: 1920 x 1080 pixels at 25fps
  • 1080p: 1920 x 1080 pixels at 24fps (actually 23.976fps)
  • 720p: 1280 x 720 pixels at 60fps (actually 59.94fps)
  • 720p: 1280 x 720 pixels at 50fps
  • SD: 640 x 480 pixels at 30fps (actually 29.97fps)
  • SD: 640 x 480 pixels at 25fps

What's this mean:

* During movie shooting or if movie cropping has been set, the image cannot be magnified for manual focusing.

What is movie cropping? Can it shoot windowed I wonder?

There's no point in having clean uncompressed HDMI if there is moire.
What's the moire like on the nikon? because the d800 moire looked bad

If canon have fixed the moire then for me its a winner of the uncompressed hdmi

Time code!

Canon Rumors:
"The EOS 5D Mark III builds on the reputation of the EOS 5D Mark II, with a range of new features introduced following feedback received from photographers to provide even better Full HD video performance. As well as offering the depth-of-field control loved by video professionals, the new full-frame sensor combines with the vast processing power of DIGIC 5+ to improve image quality by virtually eradicating the presence of moiré, false colour and other artefacts. The addition of a movie mode switch and a recording button also offers greater usability, enabling videographers to begin shooting immediately when movie mode is engaged. Additional movie functions include manual exposure control and an enhanced range of high bit-rate video compression options, with intraframe (ALL-I) and interframe (IPB) methods both supported. Variable frame rates range from 24fps to 60fps, and the addition of SMPTE timecode support provides greater editing flexibility and easier integration into multi-camera shoots. Users can also check and adjust audio during recording via the camera’s Quick Control screen and a headphone socket enables sound level monitoring both during and after shooting. Enhanced processing power provided by DIGIC 5+ also makes it possible to conveniently trim the length of recorded movies in-camera."

That's what it sounds like to me.

I'm also curious about autofocus in movie mode. I see no mention of it anywhere

Agreed. Nikon will have to improve....let's hope they do, because Canon has made it clear that they're NOT going to cross that bridge for now. (That or hope that Magic Lantern can hack it as they have recently mentioned...)

I agree. If the D800 is not the best image creator I will not buy it either. But for my preference, if I am to use a DSLR for video work I want to have proper audio recorded inside the video stream. Both are pre-review but Canon has lost my respect here with this one attribute.

b and h has it listed as backordered already
