5D MKIII specs

This sample on vimeo is very bad (compression) - doesn't tell me anything about the Mk.III other than slightly improved rolling shutter.

Way too much negativity here.

Better codec, better low light, headphone out, better stills, 720/60p, less moire, less aliasing.... isn't this what EVERYONE was crying out for?

If the resolution and DR are also improved... then this is going to be the best FF camera for video. Simple.

DR and Highlight rolloff look impressive on this video. Similar to the early F3 promos.

Great! I can tell just from these 960x540 video that it's better than the D800 already and 5DII at 1920x1080 already. There's less moire, it's more detailed (now waiting for 1080p to see if it is as good as the GH2...) and the grain quality looks great and not mushy blocks. NICE.

The video with the little girl has plenty enough for me to make a decision. If it is a post sharpening job you'll know as soon as you look at footage.

... now to find an early body... to at least mess with.

The moire improvement would suggest higher res too. If I read it correctly this DIGIC5+ processor is 17 times faster than DIGIC4 so you would think they could avoid lineskipping. Panasonic have been doing it for years.

Undoubtedly in my mind this resolves higher resolution ^_^ Yay!

I did notice the excessive post sharpening squiggly lines too. Why do manufacturers still bother with that? Even for web purposes too. Canon should just have a 'sharpen' option on their LCD display on the camera than on the actual video settings. If I want fake sharpening I'd add a filter on my NLE or just crank up the 'Sharpening' setting on my monitor it does the same thing! :)

I think we have a contender. 3200 ISO looks clean, even 6400 looks good. If it has some more dynamic range it could be a winner. Full frame GH2 that can see in the dark for $3500 sounds like a good deal to me.

This might have already been said, but there are 25 pages now that I'm not going to go through :) They mention they use the Digic 5+ processor to "vastly improve" moire and aliasing. That might imply that the video is downsampled from a full frame image, n'est ce pas? In which case there would be little to no moire/aliasing. That would require the read/reset of the sensor to be much faster, but what else could the Digic 5+ processor be doing? It can't really reduce moire or aliasing some other way, can it?

A big positive in the bike footage is that the MKIII seems to have a brighter gamma. This is very welcomed as the "DSLR" crushed blacks look does not seem to be baked in. On the flip side, this footage is not very sharp. Sure it looks nice but it does not look any crisper than the MKII.

hmm...the first thing that jumped to my mind was: it still has that baked in look. But maybe I was watching too much S-log and C-log lately. Agree on the softness, which reminded me of D4 footage I saw. But we need to see the real footage and not vimeo to really judge the IQ.

No, I was crying out for a GH2-like quality and at first look it doesn't look like it. But again these could have been destroyed by bad downscaling and who knows what. Just saying that if I downscale a 1080p video to 540p it will look better than those....just saying :)
Awaiting 1080p untouched videos to comment :)

It seems to have most of the features I was looking for. We'll have to wait for more codec info and confirmation of reduced moire/aliasing in real world situations. I was going to buy an APS-C camera at some point this year because I need the 60 FPS for music videos, so if I sell the MK2 and don't buy the APS-C camera I'm 70% there as far as affording one of these bodies.

The wides are DEFINITELY sharper even at this resolution than the 5d2, but, as many have pointed out, the resolution on these web videos is pretty low so I think it's hard to tell. And that bike video, whoever compressed that, needs to check their settings. The marionette video has much better compression going on.

I still want to know if it can run in windowed mode. Can I use it as a S35? Does the rolling shutter improve even more? How is the noise handling in a crop mode?

The marionette footage looks superb, I couldn't spy any moire in the fine textures of the character's wool knits, or in any of the many bricks/tiles in the film. The motion also looked really nice - none of the skittishness that rolling shutter tends to offer.

Just clarification about where it states "File Formats – AVI, RAW, H.264, MOV, MPEG-4", at CanonRumors. This is only listed under specifications "File Formats", and it's for a stills camera on a site mainly read by stills photographers. So apart from the association, there's not much reason to think that this wasn't just stills RAW. Of course this doesn't rule it out being video RAW, just that it might not be as significant as someone thinks, who's reading it from the perspective of video.

I've just noticed... 22mpix is EXACTLY (1920x3)x(1280x3): could it be that they've gone for a new Bayer pattern with a 3x3 basic structure? maybe with RGBW or even RGBWK? that could be seriously awesome, even if it's downsampled to 1080p before encoding... http://www.similaar.com/foto/bayer/rgbwk.html

These two statements combined, considering there is no mention of jpeg leads me to think that the sensor is in the c300 style and we would be given a 1920x1080 RAW video. RAW doesn't necessarily mean not down sampled, depending on the sensor layout/configuration.

I'll tell you who this kills is the Mosaic filter. They had a golden opportunity that has to a degree been frittered away. The inability to ship product in a timely manner stopped a lot of people (including me) from ordering one (you seriously want me to pay $400 for something I may not get for 8 weeks...). Now there is no way I'd pay that price when I could just take that $400, add it to what I could sell my MK2 for, and be well on the way to a MK3.

I'm feel sure that this sensor has nothing to do with the c300 sensor.
5D3 isfull frame, the c300 sensor is s35 so its much smaller.

Also the c300 sensor's pixels are at Quad HD resolution which derives to 4 sets of 1080p ... two green of which are green, one blue, one red. This info was projected during the c300 presentation in Hollywood on Nov 3

You know what's not a surprise at all? HDMI out. For all the grief people give Barry Green, he's right most of the time. Canon's always late to the party and super conservative.

Just another example of falling behind the curve.

More I look at these videos, the more I see post sharpening, the less interested I am.

Oh well.
