5d Mark III: lots of hissing with external lav

Hi friends,

does 5d mark III have auto gain control for audio? because when i shoot interview with external lav, i get lots of hissing sound. My lav records to only one channel and when i feel the mute channel to make it sound stereo, the hissing sound is magnified.

The hissing is clearly audible when the subject takes a pause. it feels like the audio gain done automatically but when the subject speaks, the hissing sound becomes less audible.

any idea about it?

regards,

Not sure if this would help out or not but I found two issues when I hook up the Beachtek recorder to the 5d mkIII;

1. The sound recording in the 5d mkIII had to be set less than 25% otherwise I would get a hiss sound.

2. What I found out which you don't see in the manual is that you have to use Alkaline batteries for the sound recorder, when I used other batteries I would get either a hiss or a high pitch sound. I was getting ready to use the camera for a shoot when this happened and we kept putting in new batteries and the sound was still there so we ended up using another camera for the shoot. Later on after talking to the Beachtek company I found out that I had to use the Alkaline batteries. On the last shoot we had no issues and I made sure that I had a dozen batteries on hand.

Hopefully this info will help you out some.

Dialog is mono..... environment and effects are stereo.

If you have it set on auto then you are auto gaining, if you have it on manual, it should remain where you set it to begin with.
Are you feeding the camera directly with the lav or does it go through a micro port?

I'm guessing most people shooting for a living on DVXUser will advise you to only use DSLR audio as a synch track. I don't know how well the circuitry of the MkIII holds up, but I expect you'll have a massive improvement in tone and presence and SN ratio if you go with even a Tascam 40 or 60. The DR-D60 has been $199 with a free copy of PluralEyes for a while, which is almost like stealing. XLRs, phantom power, metering, -6db safety tracks, and the ability to grab up to 4 tracks is pretty unbeatable. It also functions well as a preamp for DSLRs, so you'll have a backup track or at least a very clean synch track with no delay or phase issues.

Thanks for the reply, would you recommend recording only to the tascam and sync in post or should i feed the audio from tascam into the dslr? i record in pal (25fps) at what setting should i record it in the digital recorder? are there options for recording it?

btw, i guess i should get tascam dr-40 from myself to record interviews. thanks for your reply.
