5D Mark II and RED ONE comparison test

LOL...now THAT'S a plan!! :)

Well, the people that would be involved in a plan like that would probably say "what's in it for me?" I bet you that would add up to much more than the 5DII costs.

Your moderately well planned robbery costs more than you think....

So what's up now, LEE? :kali:

The camera is so easy to shoot with it makes me want to shoot all the time.

Amen. I sold my hvx setup to fund the mkii kit + H4n + accessories. I'm in the exact same boat as ryansheffer, and it is perfect for me. Perfect. I'm having a blast with it and have absolutely zero regrets.

The RED has TONS of benefits over the 5d but they kind of serve different purposes.

At this point I have shot extensively with both and for me, the form factor IS what makes me want to shoot on the 5d. No one knows I'm filming but I'm shooting footage that looks like it cost thousands and thousands of dollars for that day of shooting.

I can honestly say that the 5d is the best thing that has happened to me as a filmmaker. When I first used RED I was blown away at the quality for the price but now, not so much.

The camera is so easy to shoot with it makes me want to shoot all the time.

Amen. Finally.

And I thought i was trippin.

I live in beirut, a lot of what i shoot is permitless, as lebanon is always high security.

I have a D90, saving for a 5d, even though scarlet provides a richer image (provided it comes out) I won't really use it much on the field for the hardcore stuff since it looks like a decepticon, just a thought.

Shot with RED one a few times, good DP's even though a bit 'fabulous', once in studio twice on street, was a dream image wise, but i wouldn't go for it again. too big. too ostentatious.

Of course I don't mean any offense to anyone this is just my subjective experience.

I love these VDSLR's. Even my D90. It fits anywhere, end of the day.

In no way is the RED 1 in trouble.

The amount of stuff the R1 can do that the 5D cannot is staggering ...."

The amount of stuff the 5D2 can do that the R1 cannot is also staggering.

The R1 cannot do this;

nor, can the R1 do this;
http://www.vimeo.com/4636468

the R1 cannot do this;
http://www.vimeo.com/5008702 or this
http://www.vimeo.com/4926237

and the list goes on.

You get the drift. The R1 is too bulky for many applications, and the R1 cannot do low light.

The 5D2 is now also the camera of choice in war zones and other high risk environments due to it's low light capability, and it's small form factor.
The R1 is not in the same league as the 5D2 when it comes to underwater shooting - the R1 will flounder due to poor low light performance, not to mention, just how cumbersome is the R1's water housing ?

The RED One does not have "poor low light performance." It has great low light performance, just not as good as the 5D. Which cameras would you say, other than the 5D, do better in low light than the RED One?

Once the new "Color Science" gets better integrated, RED footage will be much improved for low light especially in tungsten balanced lighting. The Varicam 3700 and some other newer 2/3" cameras are better overall in low light than the RED, not as noisy. From what I've seen of Canon 5D video footage, I would agree it is more sensitive in low lighting conditions.

I agree with most everything Pepster said...but vdgmdlu is correct about the R1's low light. To suggest that it's poor is just wrong in a big way.

OK, 'poor' amy be a little srong. And I am not a Red basher - I have never even seen one, but....

The R1 low light performance looks a little 'poor' in the clip.

eg @ 2:00, and @ 2:30.

This type of low light performance would surely limit it's application.
Eg, I doubt the R1 can do this;

If, the R1 can perform in low light, please, please, please, can someone post a link to a clip to verify this.

guys... yes you can mount a Red1.

But, whether you are mounting a Red1 or a 5D MKII it is expensive as hell in terms of time, training, and dollars.

I know several MILITARY HELICOPTER PILOTS who have combat time and they will tell you flying a RC Chopper can be harder than flying the real thing.

This is not meant to dissuade you only to give you a heads up on the reality of the situation so if you do go down that path you are fully aware of the cost and considerations vs. the payoffs...

With that said, ladies and gentleman start your RC Engines! ;-)
