5D Mark II and RED ONE comparison test

Gotta love when the Skew gets put into perspective. That rollin' shutter is nasty.

Glad that Richard took time out to do that. Although I do know that the colors are oversaturated and can be tweaked. Should have been tweaked anyway.

Will be DLing his next footage of lowlight tests.

To be fair, the 5D was waved around much faster than the RED One. The rolling shutter actually looks about the same on both of them. Just a little less on the RED for sure.

All things considered, the 5D did not do bad. Especially at 1/10th the price.

Just the fact that the 5D is constantly scrutinized next to the RED is a testament to its value.

The Rolling Shutter characteristics are FAR from RED. FAR. FAR FAR FAR.

NOWHERE NEAR. The closest I've seen from FIRST HAND PERSPECTIVE is GH-1. The MKii is nowhere NEAR.

That's your opinion, but you make it sound like a D90. Fact is that it looks bad on both cameras. In my opinion it's minimal enough to do good work on each.

This has nothing to do with opinion. It's fact based on hardware. The MKii Skew is absolutely much more apparent than RED's.

Why? Different story. But that is fact, not opinion. Now if it "looks as bad", that's opinion. Fact is it's WORSE than the the exemplary which is RED right now.

Just didn't want that misinformation to start propagating too far.

Carry on.

I did say it was less on the RED. Your signature states you have both cameras. The 5D and the RED. Why don't you just put them side by side, match the field of view and move them at the same rate so we can quantify the result.

I already have. Soon as I got the MKii. Anyone else can do the same exact thing I did: Noga Arm the MKii to the RED and Pan them. Even slower pans exhibit more Skew than the RED.

And it confirmed what I and everyone else already knew just by looking at MKii footage. It is what it is. I guess the camera only costs 2800 for the body. What can you expect?

Again, just didn't want that to get out of hand. Great camera for the price. AWesome.

If anything this demonstrates; it's how kick ass good the 5DMII is for the money. However it is not RED.
RED is pretty damn phenomenal. Now if canon wanted to really go at it; they should offer a 4k video mode with better compression.
In the next year or two, DSLR's will dramatically improve.

I like the S35MM sensor for Lens FOV characteristics for narrative, then fullframe. FF makes the FOV to much ( everything hits wide to quickly ), and can be a hassle to get that happy medium for framing. You either move in closer, or go longer, which changes the characteristics of the depth or lack of.... Just my opinion!

BTW. He loaded up a 1080p version of the test on Vimeo....

Pappasarts - I completely agree. I read all the comments before watching the video.

WOW. 5d is amazing. I can handle having to keep it really steady for the sake of an image that good for $2700. I knew it was close to RED, but I had never seen how close.

Also - I loved reading all of the comments at REDUSER about how much better RED looked and how the "baked in image" couldn't compete with raw. While that is true to an extent. The guy didn't know how to keep from crushing the blacks and had his settings in camera really messed up (saturation, sharpness, contrast, etc).

Lastly, this is a testament to why everyone I show the 5d to wants the buy one.

I also found the REDUSER comments quite funny, there seems to be a mild panic at the results, with all the Red owners heaping scorn on how dreadful the 5D is.

The bottom line is that the 5D can come close to matching the RED is many areas (and surpassing it in others like low light) - and if you have just shelled out $30k then that's not what you want to hear.

Yeah, and the hinting that the red looked more film like. Actually the red
looked more like video to me. { to be fair, they were both shot at 29.97 I believe
}

They were both videolike, But the 5d shots looked MORE DRAMATIC to me. - hence LESS video like in comparison

However, I don't know if I would like that WIDE aspect in every shot. hmmmmmm.

I do think it may not be the best B cam for the red, though,
since the looks are markedly different. Solution ? - toss the Red! :Drogar-Love(DBG):

just kiddiing Red lovers!

QFT. The fact is that there are a lot of RED ONE owners who look at the 5D imagery and are doing a big "WTF".

RED DOES shoot RAW, but RAW isn't everything.

Hey, what was that thing on his mantle?

I thought this test was cool. I agree with sunburst about both of them looking like video and that the 5D looked more “dramatic.” The reason why it did was because of its crushed blacks etc. I would personally rather an image like the Red’s where it looked plain and then I would work everything else in post production. But I do understand that one could also achieve that look with the 5D (I guess he chose not to do that for this test). In regard to the rolling shutter artifact (skew) the Red was better….but really…not by much.

Personally, IMHO, both these cameras could definitely match one another in post production. I don’t see why not.

The other reason why the 5D footage looked more "dramatic" was because it had more saturated colors. On the other hand, the RED footage was very flat.

I'm a RED fanboy, and I was actually a bit disappointed with the RED footage in this comparison, only because the 5D was made to look more impressive. A fairer comparison would've entailed dialing down the contrast, sharpness, and saturation on the 5D.

Wow, look at that skew, the camera is worthless when you whip it back and forth like you are having a seizure....

What I don't understand is why people are so critical on skew when the camera is being whipped? When will you ever see a camera moved like that? And he whipped the 5D far more than the RED. They were comparable visually. There wasn't any scientifically documented difference. And how could you in an imperfect test?

There is science in there, but it deals with the chipset and not the camera itself. To me, it looked comparable. But again, I stress - when will you ever, ever whip a camera like that?

The fact that this camera is being tested against REDs shows that we are getting close with a low cost option here. Reduser is good for entertainment, but that's about it. Nothing is better than a RED in their eyes. They worship it and the scarlet and the epic. (Though neither of the latter are actual cameras yet).

But really, I like what the MKII can do. If he tried to match the cameras, it would have been a better test.
