550d t2i = Buy it with Kit lens or no?

You can't really explore every option and try the lenses out in person in 24 hours.

28mm is not really wide enough as your wide lens. You would be better off getting the 18-55 f3.5-56 IS as part of your kit and saving up another month or two as Rockmore said.

No response needed.

Funny guy, I beg to differ.

You'd be crazy not to buy the kit lens. The Canon kit lens is decent and it's only $100 extra. It will be the most bang for the buck you will get. It will give you wide to normal range. It's small and unobtrusive. Admittedly it's not a very fast lens aperture wise, but it's a good place to start and you can always resell later. Personally, I'd pick up the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and either the 35mm f2 or 50mm 1.8 as next lenses to accompany your kit lens.

I would get it with the kit lens. The GH1 lens is better. Comparing the to lenses is apples to oranges. I had the T1i and just sold it with the announcement of the T2i. The auto-focus on the T1&T2i is Not really meant for video. It will not function as the GH1 does with it's kit lens. I focus manually anyway. If you do get the T2i the first lens I would buy is a 50mm 1.8 as it functions awesome in lowlight and it's only $100.00 brand new.

Yeah get the $100 wonder lens. Maybe toss in the 50 1.8 for another $100. Save your money and get what you really want when you can afford it.

The problem with the Kit Lens imo is I need at least a 100mm zoom, how good is the zoom on the kit lens at 55mm?

thank you

if you need 100mm zoom then just get a zoom that goes out to 100mm. You don't have that many options that meet all your criteria. Just pick one.

Well I guess my question is how far can the kit lens actually zoom to and still hold a nice image?

The more the push for extreme zoom range in lens design the more you give up in terms of distortion and sharpness usually in the corners. You can get all the hard facts at photozone.com. You can study all the problems these lenses will cause there They don't paint a pretty picture unless a lens is really perfect which none are.
You should get the kit lens and add on from there. Canon also makes a cheap 75-300mm for a few hundred extra. You can even get the long zoom on Ebay used and save more money.

You need 100 mm zoom for what? Shooting sports? 100mm lens is going to be too long for most standard coverage. On a 1.6 crop camera the 55 is plenty long for your standard MCU coverage (at least until you add more later).

Haha, where there is a will there is a way. It's an old Hack that I figured out a long time ago how to get items you want in your Gold box "My Deals" section. It's a very long process but it's also worth it.

Just google How to get items in your Amazon "Gold box"

Hey Tears, you seem pretty smart, how come you seem to know so little about lenses? Just bust'in. Do yourself a favor and study the lens data on photozone before investing in your next lens. It's all there and I think you will understand it, then maybe you can answer some of my questions. Good luck with you new camera.

I have only been into understanding lenses for about 48 hrs. It is something I knew NOTHING about. I started shooting video with my good friend last year or two on a Dvx-100a. I knew nothing about the technical side and was the artist being shot in front of the camera.

Last year a potential gig came up to help my friend record some video, all I was told was press the record button and make sure you stay in focus. I basically shot with him a couple of weddings and helped on music videos but never really understood anything.

On Feb 1st I bought a Panasonic Gh1 and since then have been trying to get up to speed. So yes the reason I know so little about lens is because I just learned a couple of days and with this own thread what it means. I am actually a professional audio guy who has fell in love with film/video. I always worked on applying sound to video, film, etc. but never actually doing the filming myself.

When I seen people using DSLRs to make music videos it just hit me like a bolt of lightning, I actually have some kind of mental problem where I can't stop reading and learning things...... So there you go.

With that said I am eagerly waiting for my t2i. When I was in College I would read an entire text book front to back and learn everything , crazy... One thing never did get was English and Grammar but since I am more of a "Free" person I never cared.

Today actually I am enrolling to continue my studies in College to learn Airplane Avionics as there is a job waiting for me, I don't even know where to start with that but I read and I learn ( some true rain man ****)

Video/Film/Music/Art is my love though so I will always do this
peace

Tears, your in the right place. There are a lot of good people here sharing a ton of info. I would check out the lens specs on photozone.com. It's the down and dirty lab sht that doesn't lie, No lens gets a pass there. If a lens can survive there it should do well on the streets. I'm looking forward to the 550D next month with a 17-40L. I set up an i7 PC this month that can take up to 24gigs of ram (Only 9 gigs so far). It edits EX3 footage in layers with no rendering. I'm looking forward to test it with 1080p H-264. out of the t2. I suspect those raw files will be a bumpy road, but you never know till you try.
