550d t2i = Buy it with Kit lens or no?

I owned the Gh1 for about 2 weeks and loved the kit lens that came with the camera, no complaints what so ever. All I want to know is if the Kit Lens that comes with the t2i is comparable ( at least equal) to the one that comes with the Gh1.

Or should I buy the Body only and get a nice multi-purpose lens for indoors/outdoors.

Thank you

Also I seen the t2i is 50mm as opposed to the gh1 which is 62mm, would that mean stock with no adapters that the 62 mm is better?

Also the kit lens sold with the Gh1 cost an INSANE amount of money ($800+) judging by that wouldn't that mean the kit lens in the Gh1 is better as the kit lens that comes with the t2i only cost about $150+.

Basically I need a guru to help me out here

thanks

The kit lens on the Gh1 covers 14-140mm while the kit lens on the t2i covers 18-55mm

So in theory alone the Kit lens on the Gh1 allows you to get closer to your subject and allows you to also shoot from a further distance as well. I am reading and will be constantly updating.

It looks like I need a good lens 28mm or lower for nice wide shots and a telephoto lens in the 100 to 300mm , now I need to find the best price/quality.

Excellent guide I am now reading

It seems that a good lens for this camera can easily cost about $500+ dollars, when comparing that to the GH1 I must say now that the Gh1 is actually a better deal. The kit lens that comes with the t2i only cost about $150, if you were to sell it you might get $100-125 for it. So the t2i cost $900 with the kit lens.
The Gh1 cost $1200 with the kit lens, but the MAJOR difference here is you can easily sell the kit lens for $650+ which is HUGE.

(Gh1) So $1200 - $650 ( selling the gh1 kit lens ) = $550 body only
(t2i) So $900 - $125 ( selling kit lens ) = $775 body only ( or you can buy the body only for $800.

So in comparison the Gh1 body is actually very cheap and if sold by itself would only be about $500-$600 imo, therefore making the t2i actually more expensive when compared to the the Gh1.

Yes you can get the t2i for $900 with the kit lens ( but that lens cannot even be compared to the 14-140mm that comes with the gh1, not even close)

Ok people, thoughts on my morning journey for knowledge ( I know I have MUCH MORE to learn)

I can't really tell because no matter what lens is on the GH1, I've always found the super sharpness of the detail and colours from the gH1 body really distracting.

If I could see the kit lens of the GH1 on a 7D/T2i, then I'd be able to make more of a comparison, but of course that isn't likely.

I've always found the waaay cheaper kit lens of the other more expensive bodies in combination (eg 500D+18-55/55-200, or Nikon D90+18-105mm) to look far better than anything on the GH1+kit.

To me it's like comparing 8 megapixel camera phone's carl zeiss lenses. Basically it's comparing apples to oranges.

It is an inferior lens.

So there are ONLY two things bad I can think of about the 14-140mm kit lens that comes with the Gh1.

Which does not have a fixed aperture 4.0-5.8 and is not very good in low light. Now for what I shoot ( music videos, documentaries) I can set up lights and I no longer have this problem.

The aperture adjusting at different zoom levels however is a slight problem, but usually the subject will remain at always the same distance when doing a performance or documentary.

So now that I am thinking about it more and more I truly feel that for $1200 the Gh1 is actually a better buy than the t2i as I cannot find a comparable lens.
If someone knows of a good telephoto zoom lens that can be used with the t2i, please correct me

THanks

Your eyes must not like the look of the gh1, because on paper the 14-140mm is worth more and a better lens .

If you're looking for re-sale value, yeah the Kit GH1 lens would hold up more.

The Fujinon A15x8BDEVM-28B kit lens for some SD broadcast cameras is better on paper being 8mm-120mm and f/1.8. They can be bought for $1000 second hand too.

But even with that lens on a DSR-570 broadcast cam, just because it's worth more, doesn't mean it is a "better". I much prefer the look of the 5D/7D/550D/D9/D5000 with what you would call an 'inferior' lens =]

You couldn't even put these 2/3 or 4/3 lenses on those bigger DSLRS anyway! They'd vignette and look soft and rubbish.

But at the end of the day, it's what our eyes like and I disagree on paper its better. It's certainly different...

As to what I'm doing, I'm going to buy the 18-55 and 55-250mm twin lens kit for the 550D =] Pretty good value for £200. Sure f/3.5 or f/5.6 is abit slow, but it's more than enough for what I need and aethetically I love them.

I owned the Gh1 for two weeks before I sold it and this week I will buy it again or the t2i. The lens kit that came with the gh1 shoots amazing footage and I still have not found one good footage with the 18-55, 55-250, or even 28-105mm lens.

Please show me one good footage. I could buy all three of these lenses and it is still less money than the panasonic gh1 14-140mm lens. I truly am believing the that lens is just far superior to any other lens that is less than $500+ dollars

"The kit lens on the Gh1 covers 14-140mm while the kit lens on the t2i covers 18-55mm"

Not a fair comparison. The GH1 has a crop factor of 2 and the t2i has a 1.6. So the gh1 is eqiv to 28-280, and the t2i is equiv to about 28-88. For me personally, I do not need lens longer than 105, but that is preference. For the lens, I would stick with a lens with a 2.8 aperture.

Yes, but any tele zoom lens will easily cost in the thousands. Now if I get a fixed prime yes, but show me a tele zoom lens for the Gh1 with a fixed or even that low 2.8 and I will buy it.

I feel your pain. I was literally about to buy the GH1 (even sent off for a $67 FD adapter for it) when news of the new Canon came out. Once I saw the footage, I decided to plunk down the money for the Rebel and suck it up when it came to lenses.

I decided to buy the body only and get a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens with VC which came to about $560 through Amazon Warehouse Deals. You can get the non VC version for cheaper at around $450 new which would be around what you'd pay for the GH1 with kit lens. If you use a stabilizer system of some sort like tripods, glidecam, etc, then you could save a little cash and get the non-VC version.

If you're planning on getting lots of lenses for your camera then the GH1 might be the more economical choice in the long run as it can fit just about any lens ever made. Hope this helps!

I was referring the T2i/550D bundle (18-55mm), not the GH1 kit lens.

U get what u pay for

If all u ever shoot with is a kit lens then thats all u will ever know

Yes I agree, but what I am referring to is PRICE. When more money becomes available then yes, better lenses for specific situations is something I would love to have. My issue is that many people are raving about the t2i. Problem is that even with a descent lens it would cost you more than a Gh1.

The kit lens that comes with the Gh1 is a better lens than the kit lens that comes with the t2i, so to even get something comparable you would have to spend $500+ putting you at around $1300.

This is my problem and with only a $1200 budget I believe the Gh1 is a better deal. Now if someone can prove me wrong I am all for it.

Find me a lens for the t2i that cost maximum $400 which is better than the 14-140mm lens that comes with the gh1.

Which I agree, I think that a better bundled lens should come with the camera!

It sounds like the GH1 is the camera for you. I went with the Canon because of the higher bit rate, the cost of the body, and the arguably better picture.

There is another discussion to be had about value vs. low cost but that's for another day. Everything has its trade offs.

Hopefully you can post some nice videos real soon then when you get the camera. Truth is I have seen amazing footage shot with the Kit lens of the Gh1, to get that same kind of footage with a 7d you need better lenses than with what comes with the camera making the price even more expensive.

Regardless, I'm done here

peace

the kit lens is nice on the t2i but will not give you as beautiful of footage as you are used to seeing from these cameras and may leave you feeling disappointed with your camera. As long as you know this I would go for it, just dont expect philip bloom quality bokeh and dof out of the camera.

the kit lens is 100 dollars. once you get into this field, 100 dollars wont seem like a big deal!

We had the GH1 and kit lens. We got rid of it 2 months later.

And with the D90 kit lens (which is arguably worse than the twin Canon lens)

All in the hand of the user really. Sure you can add alots more lenses to the GH1, but IMO when I think the body is the bottleneck no amount of lenses will fix my opinion of its look :) Have you got any great examples anywhere of GH1 and kit lens videos I can take a gander at?

It's an astonishing deal for what you get with the T2i/500D.

You must work for CANON. Also sure the 10-22mm wide lens looks great but at a cost of $700+ your just not getting the point......

With that said here you go http://vimeo.com/6338445
