5400rpm?

If we'll use a 5400rpm only for OS and running our editing and color correction apps

...is a 7200rpm disk strictly necessary?

(the idea would be to only use external 7200rpm disks for storage)

Actually you should be doing the opposite and run the Apps on the 7200 RPM HDD and use the 5400RPM for storage. Now if you really want to get fancy on the cheap you can use your Express Card Slot and add a 64GB SSD and run the Apps, for under $200.00

And if without Express Card Slot? Can a USB 3.0 or eSATA port work the same for a 64GB SSD to run the apps?

Why expresscard? I dont know of any expresscard SSDs that can compare in speed or price to modern 2.5" SSDs. Why not just swap out the SYSTEM HDD for an SSD? Then use HDD for storage. This is how I have my workstation set up.

HDD storage is so cheap there's no reason not to go with 7200 RPM. I recommend WD caviar black...5 year warranty and a great RMA system.

I didn't know this, wish I did. What kind of 7200rpm hdd should I get for a Mac pro? And how can I transfer things like FCP7 and CS5 to the new hdd?

Because I was referring to laptops, and the convenience and price of portability of Express Card SSD which you can take with you anywhere and use on any laptop or desktop that has Express Card slot (think about the portability of your apps on the size of smaller than a Credit Card). Of course the best solution is to have an internal SSD but price and changing the internal HDD drive is expensive and again I am referring to Laptops and trying to stay within budged which most of us are. Now if you are really serious and actually need work to be done and have deadlines than the use of desktop with different config is needed. Based on the question that the OP is asking it clearly shows you something, so I believe the best solution for him/her is to get 7200rpm HDD and run the apps from there and get the same thing for storage, they are very very cheap so to get an 5400rpm vs 7200 rpm is nonsense. Again if you are really serious about editing than you shouldn't be using a laptop on the first place unless this is a hobby and you have money to spend.

I personally recommend any of the Ghlyph storage systems, I have 4 of them with 2 of them being over 7 years old and have never crashed and I had almost every possible drive that has been on the market over the last 10 years.
