50Mbps AVCHD Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch

thanks.
wasn't sure if that was max bitrate the camera could handle or just max stable bitrate for recording to class 6 cards.

i got a solution for low light no movement case. take a pic. optionally use ext flashes. optionally photoshop it. import it. drop it on timeline. set duration. done.

wiseguy eh?
i meant no CAMERA movement and minimal movement of the subject.
eg: person sitting. but their eyes will move, blink, look around, etc, so a photo won't cut it.
but thanks for thinking creatively. ;)

sounds like very controlled settings. why not give more ambient lights and lower iso setting to simulate low light?

yes im concerned about failing gh13, too. not getting the mode setting i want at the moment i really need it? oh no!!! one day i might get pissed off and order GH2 body. hopefully GH2 hack is available and mature by then.

anyways good luck!

you mean UNcontrolled setting.
and yes, most documentary work is 'catch as catch can'.
of course there are always workarounds, time and space permitting.
but it is good to know the limitations of this patch....which is why i've shared my experiences here.

what is the real frame-rate for LPowell's 40Mbps reliable patch with 1080p? And what is the frame-rate with the 50Mbps fast action patch?

Is an NTSC GH-1 set for Pal output laying down 25p in Mpeg mode?

Is an NTSC GH-1 set for Pal output laying down 25p in Mpeg mode?

Hi All,

New to the forum. been trying Lowel's excellent fast 3 gop and reliable playback patches. They're incredible! Thanks!

I am having no problem checking 24p native AVCHD and writing to Class 10 cards, even when I set the 1920x1080 24p GOP to 3. Flawless looking stuff.

But I am having a major problem shooting PAL. I have an NTSC camera. When I load either the fast action or the reliable patch and set my camera to PAL output and put in a pal format sdhc card, all works great in AVCHD 25p mode. Avid reports it as a 25 frame format.

BUT - if I shoot in any MPEG mode, it seems to only shoot in 30p. 30fps on any PAL MPEG mode clip is reported by Quicktime, AVid, Eidus, TMpgenc, etc. These programs are unanimous that these supposed PAL mpeg clips are recorded at 30fps.

So I'm wondering, has anyone that has an NTSC camera and used these patches actually ever tested PAL Mpeg shooting and pulled the file into an editor? If so, are you seeing that it's a 25fps format? FWIW: My pal or ntsc mpeg clips with these patches look the same, i.e. the frame rates seem to match. And I shoot PAL all the time in Europe so I know the difference between the 25p look and the 30p look.

Thanks in advance for any help.

That's right, the GH1's MJPEG encoder always produces 30p, regardless of whether you select NTSC or PAL.

There is a patch in PTool which allows you to change the MJPEG frame rate. However, it doesn't really change the inherent 30p frame rate; it just drops frames or duplicates them to produce the changed frame rate.

mine had Ipowell's j setting. i replaced it with his "i" setting as soon as i read ipowell's posting on the friday night. yeah i was wondering why we need 60fps recording for 720 if we convert to 24p anyways. also i wondered if theres any noticeable difference between 24p and 30p. if 30p works, thats great. sometimes shutter speed at 1/30s does help. thats one stop gain from 1/60s. more efficient avchd recording and more bits squeezing. two thumbs up!!! thank you!!!

for me, this part is huge.
it's a little frustrating when i want to shoot 24p at 1080 that i have to set shutter to 1/60 and lose so muc light! with native 24p on video cameras you gain some light over shooting 30p, but the reverse is true on the gh1 since 24p is really recorded at 60i.

i'm really liking the stability, lowlight, and natural blur shooting 30p at 1/30, but wish i could get a full 1080 out of it. i guess i need to accept that this camera is really only a partial HD cam and, in that regard, a step down from the Canons.

but then i also really like being able to shoot 24p with some 60p for slowmo, which is my standard setup for documentary shoots. arrrrgh. do i go with 'great in lowlight, but no slowmo' or 'full HD + slowmo option'? the lowlight need will probably win out on an uncontrolled real-life documentary shoot.

output 720p to 1080p. easy.

if smooth 2.5x slowdown is a must, 720/60p avchd is a must. reliable 40Mbps avchd mode for that. enable 24pN option for 1080/24pN avchd for normal speed. then combine it with 35Mbps mjpeg or 60Mbps mjpeg for low light.

it would be nice if we can load two different setting files from ptool so that we dont have to create so many combined settings.

Several times I found some comments which are related to GOP length and its divisibility by the frame-rate (vice-versa). Why should frame-rate and GOP number be related at all? Framerate just tell us number of frames IN ONE SECOND (how fast are they taken). Who said that clip length should be whole amount of seconds? At least most of my clips are not (all according to statistics, anyway). :)

So I cannot see any reason why you can't have 25FPS and GOP=3,4,6,.... Only the clip length in frames will be n-times the selected GOP. Just forget about seconds and, instead, measure the clip length in frames.

i can't upscale 720 to 1080 mjpeg with the fast action patch using my Transcend Class 10 cards. they choke immediately.

Hi Ipowell,
thanks for sharing your patch.
Regarding cbrandins discussion about the native on with increased overall bitrate that sadly not worked at the end with your 50Mbps bitrate settings - do you know the max bitrate and GOP length settings for working with Native ON and class10 cards?

I tryed a lot and ended with shooting high detailed scenes
native on
FHD/SH 41000000
Overall 44000000
GOP 3

Shutter speed <60 works mostly fine but not stable at all time that i gonna ask you for a better maximum class10 setup, if you know...

thanks

At the present time, there is no known combination of patches that can make Native 24p recording reliable, regardless of SD card class.

With Native 24p unchecked, PTool will not apply any GOP patch to FHD videos. Lacking those two patches, the rest of your settings would not be optimal.

30fps Mpeg even on a PAL Cam?

30fps Mpeg even on a PAL Cam?

Does this 30fps in PAL Mpeg occur on a true PAL GH-1 bought in Europe?

hey guys, been a while since I've been really clued in to all the GH13 patches....

I'm doing some work which involves shooting on HVX200- I'd like to start to introduce GH13 and lpowell's reliability patches.

Crunched for time, I've read as much as I can but need a quick breakdown if someone could be so kind:

Shooting conditions: variable light( brights/darks )
both- locked down shots as well as handheld(some kind of stabilizing rig)
race cars- so fast action, as well as CU's of subjects w/ slight movement

Cameras:

HVX200 shooting 720p24
GH13 (w/ 50Mbps AVCHD Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch) shooting ???? kit 14-140 lens as well as variety of Canon FD glass.

I would love to take advantage of slo-mo (720p60)
low-light.....would I switch to MJPEG??
(I'm using an 40mbits reliability patch right now- and shoot a lot of 1080p24 but am getting too much jello for this application of shooting)

My real issue is, how am I conforming all of these different codecs, framerates etc. to play nice in the same timeline (FCP 6)????

Also are the Ptool and settings on first page updated??

Thanks ahead of time for all responses!!!

first see this: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=222185

then, don't apply the 'fast-action' patch, but use the 'reliable' patch. the 'fast-action' patch eliminates the 60p option.
then, shoot 1080_24p or 720_60p depending on the situation.
that's it.
if you have jello, it's because you're moving the camera too much and you should shoot in 60p.
all settings/info are always updated on the first post.

wow- those grabs are great, it's funny how the two cams compare....because....they DO. I've seen some footage that Ben B. has put together involving both HVX200 + GH1 and it looks good. Your comparison works as well, but for us pixel peepers, the GH13 really wins but the in the end the two work quite well together, this is promising.

Yeah, client is a pretty prominent race car series so 'testing' won't work, I'm trying to slip in when I can but yeah, the cam movement is killing me. If it's super controlled then these dslr's are mega impressive, otherwise, the client is looking at this footage like...."this looks like crappy handheld phonevideo....they don't care about high bitrates, thay just want good looking content. So if 60 is the way to go, (which is what my hunch was anyways), then that's it...

thanks averan
