Hi DVX User gang,

I have a project coming up where I'll be filming a dance event. As such, we'd like to shoot several hours at 720/50p (I'm in PAL land). That rules out shooting to P2.

Has anyone used a workflow like this:

  • Shoot on an HVX200 at 720/50p.
  • Record onto a USB2 7200 rpm hard disk using a Win XP laptop running DV Rack 2.0 HD.
  • Use DV Rack to convert the files to AVIs.
  • Edit on Premiere Pro 2.0.
  • Grade on Color Finesse.
  • Output as PAL DVD, WMV9 HD and H.264 HD

Will that work?!? I understand the Win XP laptop needs to be well specified (1.8GHz dual core, 7200 rpm disk).

Has anyone used DV Rack 2.0 HD to record files to a USB2 hard disk?

Many thanks,
Jack

In my experience, DV Rack 2.0 HD manages to successfully record DVCProHD video on systems that are significantly below the official System Requirements. I have a P4M 1.5GHz and can record both 720 and 1080 without dropping frames.

Granted, the CPU is maxed out and screen updates slow down, but the recording takes precedence over the monitoring, and continues uninterrupted.

I capture to an internal 7200RPM drive, recording to an external USB drive would increase CPU utilization by maybe 10% because unlike Firewire, USB transfers require significant CPU attention.

DV Rack already records in AVI format, there is no conversion necessary. All you need to do is install the DVCProHD decoder that comes with DV Rack 2.0 HD on the system running Premiere.

Brilliant, thanks loads for the reply.

Do I need to pay extra for the DVCProHD decoder for my PPro workstation? I assume not.

Cool, I'm looking forward to recording some 50fps HD footage on a low budget corporate. It's impressive to think that this simply would not have been possible 12 months ago.

The Serious Magic license agreement allows you to install DV Rack on two systems -- they realize that most people use a laptop in the field, and a desktop to edit.

How many computers can I activate my software on?
When you purchase software from Serious Magic, you are buying a license for one person to use the software. Since many of our customers have both a desktop and a laptop system, we allow activation on 2 systems simultaneously.
