Hey i have a $500 (well really 700 but that includes a varizoom rocker) for a tripod. What would you guys suggest for the 500? I am also open to another option for the varizoom. I am replacing the tripod and rocker that was used in a theatre room to record live shows. I took the tripod to a trip overseas and the airline lost my luggage. They did send me an $1100 check though so its all good. I have $700 allotted to replace the tripod and zoom/focus rocker for that room (using dvx100b) what do you guys favor for that use?

Check out ExpressCameras.com
They have really awesome prices.

Uh, don't. Express Cameras is a well known bait and switch scam outfit. Note how djtacoman just joined the forum today and this is his only post. He probably works for Express and wants to reel you in.

Yeah, I've noticed a lot of people like the kit with the midlevel spreader. I have one like that, but I like the wilderness b/c I can raise it so freakin' high if I need to.

I had a bit more to spend, so I bought virtually brand new Bogen legs on eBay (3036) for $195 and a brand new Bogen 503 head from EVS.

I have a DVX and it's good enough, not pro, but definitely good enough.

the manfrotto tripods seem to be in your range for the leg and all
Those are probably the best tripods for the price. Many shooters have Manfrottos that are over 10 years old, with very little problems.

The rule of thumb with tripods has been to buy or rent the best one for your camera. If you have only cameras that are in the class of the DVX100, HVX200, Sony HDVs, etc., the Manfrotto is perfect.

If you own or frequently use larger cameras, like the Varicam or F900, having a single, universal tripod that can support the larger units is recommended. I've seen disasters with tripods perfect for the DVX100, but not the Varicam!
