5.1/7.1 surround sound capture

with the addition of a surround-sound mic like this one and an 8 channel on-camera mutichannel audio recorder. It could work for any field applications including ENG, sports, events and documentary filmmaking. It could be useful for features and narrative applications also.

It could record audio data in 2 ways: Fully uncompressed in up to 8 channels (for 7.1 surround) or on-camera encoded (Dolby Pro Logic or other) to achieve 5.1 surround on just 2 audio channels, this would obviously save disk space but would require an additional on-camera decoder for audio monitoring on the field.

While this is easily done nowadays with the addition of a small audio crew and additional audio equipment, it would be incredible to be able to shoot 4k/2k video and record surround audio just by oneself, just sit back and imagine...

Finally, If all of this is too far fetched, at least give the camera 4 outstanding preamps, compressors and limiters. Oh! and FOUR XLR connectors.

Thanks for listening RED team.

This sounds good, but I personally like the idea of a great camera with no sound at all. Sync sound in camera is over-rated. I always shoot double system and I like not having to buy audio in the camera, not to mention wasting the camera's bandwidth on audio tracks. On my last project, we used a MOTU 196HD that records 8 tracks of pristine audio. Let the audio experts do audio and let me mix and match my favorite camera to my favorite external audio.
