4Kraw with Sony R5

i've started to test the 4Kraw with Sony R5 raw recorder. Sony Japan is kind enough for me to play with this baby tank unit so i will share the information and footage here.

here's the first test i did :
https://vimeo.com/87846672

it looks very "clipped highlight" ETTR footage, i needed to do this for avoiding the noise the S-Log2/ISO2000 produced, AND see how we can recover the highlight at post.

you can download the original 4Kraw and few DPX (10bit444) still image :

R5 or OD7Q...i really don't care which gear suits better for FS700's raw solution. i just like the raw from FS700 and hope you guys have some time to tweak the original footage with your own editing suite.

thanks for sharing! What lensed did you use? It looks quite impressive sharp!

Can you give me a hint how to handle the mxf file in AE PP FCP X oder Resolve? Seems none of the programs is able to import your files (Sorry if this might be a sheepish question..)

edit
they work in Premiere AE with the Sony Plug in or you can export them out of the Sony RAW viewer to DPX 10BIT 444 Here's short play around in PP CS6 and Magic Bullet Looks rendered to ProRes LT

the lenses i've used for that footage ware Sony E mount 35mm F1.8 OSS and 10-18mm F4 OSS. i'm more Zeiss and Rokinon Cine prime with Metabones shooter normally but i would liked to test the "FS700's Auto Focus" at 4K shooting so i've borrowed couple of Sony Lenses from them.

so yes, all footage i uploaded ware actually AFed. aim the camera, exposure as ETTR and push AF button and TA-DA! you can get that looked footage at 4K. VERY EASY! :)

BTW, the grading you did was great! grading with raw material is fun, isn't it?

that's the my idea to share these here. either R5 or OD7Q, those fantastic gear will gives us huge benefit and we have more fun time with our lovely FS700! :)

That 4k footage is stunning! Even the zoomed in bits showed great detail.

thanks for your comment!

as i mentioned above, all footage ware taken with Auto Focus by Sony E mount lenses. it looked enough sharp and just wondering if i can use more serious cine lens...nice!

and please note that day i shot the footage was hazy all day...my country Japan has serious problem with "PM2.5", micro dust has carried by the wind from China...sigh...

I am aware that that the grade is a little kitschy but I wanted to see how it holds shadows and details if you push the colors.

After the disappointment if the 18-105 I was pleasantly surprised of the 10-18. I would have expected more distortion but it's really great. Real cinematographers don't use autofocus :) but for me as a solo shooter it's a great benefit.

10-18mm F4 is very sharp and less distortion lens, i strongly recommend to everyone!

Auto Focus is good for solo shooter, especially use with STEADICAM/GLIDECAM stuff, but remember, manual focusing at 4K shooting situation is VERY serious stuff. we might need extra time to check the focus again and again...

i will post more 4Kraw stuff shortly!

Hey Freiheit,

I've just put up a thread asking about O7Q / R5 comparisons - but I realise you might be able to shed some light on the situation.

Basically - it looks to me like the Sony Raw viewer is doing some clever noise reduction on it's exports of the the FS700 and F5 Raw footage, at least in comparison to how the same shots appear when in Resolve when comparing the basic Raw footage, with Slog/SGamma LUT applied, against the same footage exported from Raw viewer as a DPX and with the same LUT applied.

Can you confirm/deny this? Or am I just being an idiot and messing up the Resolve workflow somehow?

EDIT: Scratch that. I'm a muppet. I was using the wrong camera raw settings.

interesting question, Colin. I think one reason of the low noise was the fact that they were quite exposed to the right. Can you confirm this, Freiheit?

what i did with Odyssey7Q last November was test with 2Kraw Cinema DNG and now i've testing with R5 for 4Kraw. i'm not sure what's the different between CinemaDNG and Sony raw...however, one thing i'm pretty sure about that Sony raw is much faster for reading/writing with my old Macintosh.

i will post few small comparison between 1080P (AVCHD internally), 2Kraw and 4Kraw shortly. and you guys will see how great the 4Kraw is.

once i shot 4K with FS700, i just can't go back to normal 1080P...i know my place will be filled with hard drives but i can live with that! :)

thanks for sharing. Great to see this difference. Hopefully all paper work between C-D and the not-to-be-named-company is done until my next paid job.

before i will upload the video from 4Kraw 120fps stuff, here's the link for the images from the footage.

remember, those images are from 120fps. it's pretty nice we have moire free super slow motion!

thanks for sharing freiheit! Every frame looks like a picture taken with a high quality stills camera, I'm so stoked about getting the 4k from this camera!

yes, this time i've testing with R5 but soon we can get exactly the same stuff with Odyssey7Q too. i'm very happy that our baby FS700 becomes 4Kraw monster camera! :)

Wow, that looked fantastic Freheit. Great compositions and the IQ was amazing. Is the 4K RAW on the R5 buffered? I seemed to remember it was a 4 second buffer, but I could be wrong.

So when is the 7Q going to get 4K 120fps? :)

As much as I would like to see highspeed 4k implemented in the O7Q, I don't think Sony will ever budge on it. They allowed 2k because(without a swappable olpf) its good enough for some things, but higher end productions will seek an alternative solution and upgrade to something with less aliasing & moire(a'la f5 & f55).

I see 24p/60p @ 4k pro res as the most the 7Q will get. Again, do hope I'm wrong about it, but from a business perspective it would make complete sense to keep that feature as an upgrade path to the R5 package.
