4K Samsung NX 1 now available for pre-order

he doesn't seem to be making money from his site?

Sorry to bring this back up, but it seems some people are oblivious to how that site makes money. Through $20 guides.

He latches onto whatever the latest buzzword is (raw, mirrorless, 4K) champions whichever camera is the flavour of the month, then writes a "guide" about it. Let's not forget he made money off the back of the magic lantern work.

I have no issue with this... But it does rely on being somewhat contradictory, which I do have an issue with. Eg, He has been laughing at cameras with 4:2:0/8 bit to sell his RAW video guides.... And now has to backtrack on this to champion the NX1.

Well maybe he's learning that sometimes 8 bit 4:2:0 is okay - he also has the Sony A7S. And he sells guides on his page - big deal - so does Barry Greene - he wrote the book on the dvx100 and hvx200.
and Barry has site advertising.

So does Philip Bloom and No Film School.

Okay maybe he's not doing his website as social work - but it probably takes up a lot of his time and he needs to pay the bills.

Everyone does.

I do my own tests because I do them anyway and I like the feedback I get on them from you guys and it puts me out there. But anyway I disgress. Why does anyone share anything with anyone? For me, I am addicted to the incredible fame that comes from recognition from camera nerds.

Perfectly said! Right on the mark. It is obvious some people are totally unaware of how his game is played. But, that is his business and the fools that want to follow it, well follow it. Not me. I have absolutely zero to learn from any of his "Guides" or experiences with the camera flavor of the month.
And now back to the camera! Lol! Enough Salsa!

Barry Greene, Roger Deakins, Philip Bloom, Andrew Reid, Emmanuel Lubezki ... all phenomenal cinematographers. ;)

Ed - will you be able to post the ungraded footage? Could you put it up on DropBox? My NX1 should arrive on Wednesday, but I'd still love to mess with your footage. PM me if that's easier.

BTW - what's up with Roger Deakins not having received an Oscar yet. Good grief!!!

Lol! OoooKkkkkk.... Then you should start selling "Guides"! Lol!

John you're like 88 years old and you're saying "laughing out loud?"
Deakins gives back. Most of the greatest Dps of our time do not. And even Deakins gets tired of all the vidiots on his forum.
So here's the thing - I transcoded incorrectly with wondershare from the h.265 footage - it added contrast.

So anyway I would need to re transcode.

And so probably won't get to this for a few weeks or so.

But I'll have a better test video up by then probably anyway. I've been shooting a ton with the nx1 and god I love it. But I need to actually now with all my dumb cameras sit down in a studio with a chip chart and a model and shoot some real tests. I am curious about its dynamic range vs the red epic mx. that's my first issue. then color. I just love the color and natural sharpness out of it. The dynamic range is not up there with the sony f55 or alexa but this is a $1600 camera. And I think the natural sharpness I like more than the sony f55.

but anyway I have the nx1 to test with the red one mx, a7s, sony f35, sony f3. 5 cameras to test some charts with.

Now to have the time to do this. :)

This just too funny! I am not 88 yet, I just turned 84 last month! Not quite there yet! So instead of LOL I would say Ha,ha,ha,ha! like I used to write in the old internet last century when I was a little younger! BTW just go out and shoot some more stuff with the NX1!

Looks like there has already been a firmware update from two days back:

[v1.10]
1. Added Sort by Oldest / Latest in the Playback menu
2. Added View Continuous Shots (Fold / Unfold) in the Playback menu
3. Added AF Start and AF Start + Lock in the AF On sub menu under Key Mapping
4. Added Custom Wheel EVC (Exposure Value Compensation) option in the Key Mapping menu
5. Overall color reproduction improvement
6. General improvement in the image quality of DCI 4K(4096x2160) video
7. Image quality improvement in white balance when Smart Range+ Mode is enabled
8. Improvement in long exposure noise reduction when capturing in RAW
9. Improved AF performance:
a. Added AF Release Priority function (Auto/Accuracy Priority/ Shooting Speed Priority).
b. Improved AF performance in low light situations
c. Improved AF performance in CAF & Multi area AF modes
10. Overall wireless strobe sync improvement
11. Other bugs are fixed

I'm particularly interested in points 5 and 6. If anyone who has the camera is going to upgrade, how about some before-and-after footage?

First, the NX1 looks like an interesting camera. I'm waiting to see more footage from it.

Second. I find it funny when people criticize other people when they share sample videos online and discuss their thoughts and opinion. Usually the people that criticize are the people who DON'T seem to have anything to look at online. And they often criticize a camera test based on what seems to be first tests of the camera. They say things like, "Man that camera looks horrible and the Arri is so much better" on a video titled, "First tests of camera X". Seriously! We have multiple affordable 4K cameras out there and people are complaining? If you want an Arri look, buy an Arri! If you want 15 stops DR, buy a camera with 15 stops DR.

I find Andrew EOSHD a bit annoying at times. One week the best camera in the world is camera X and the next week it's camera Z. And I understand why people have a negative impression on him. But guess what? You all seem to keep going to his website. So he's doing something right. How about you guys get the camera for yourselves and test them on your own and open yourselves up to online bashing? Whether you like Andrew or not, give him credit for bringing early looks at different gear and having the balls to share his experience of them with all of you for FREE. Especially to an audience that is so full of complaint over 4K cameras that cost less than $2k when only a couple years ago that was a pipe dream.

Ed - are you using a generic Nikon AIS > Samsung NX adapter from eBay? I'm not seeing any listed on B&H.

My two cents: EOSHD is a resource. We don't have to read his posts, but we have the option to read them -- for free. Who doesn't like options?

It'd be great if they would enable a log recording mode in video to get the full DR of the sensor.

The NX1 supposedly has a choice of no picture profile applied to the image. What difference does it make? Aren't you getting a RAW sensor image if you don't apply a picture profile? I don't have the camera yet so I can't test it and see results but would like to have an opinion on that.

Picture profile off does not look like log. It looks like just down the middle settings. Contrast minus 10 sharpness at minus 10 and saturation down a few notches to me...without using a waveform looks to me like the best way to get the flatest image out of the camera. It has a setting called dynamic range plus but i dont trust it yet . Im using a fotodiox nx to nikon f mount and i just upgraded firmware yesterday and excited to see dailies in the computer soon.

Thanks for the info!

And now Samsung Rumors report that there may be an updated version of NX1 coming up sometime in the second half of 2015 - same size sensor, fewer pixels (down to ~ 20 MPX) with the aim of increasing the low light performance and the dynamic range.

and in unrelated news I have the camera, I just shot a feature with it, it just won an Oscar, and I'm not the greatest director in the world, but now the 15th greatest director in the world and that film I shot, "uh oh" got me the attention of Martin Scorsese. And you are still waiting on a rumor to materialize that may or may not happen and therefore may make the camera better, and by 2nd quarter 2015 I may or may not be on a spaceship to Mars while you are still stuck on planet Earth as the world decays and decays more and more.
