4K Samsung NX 1 now available for pre-order

Yes. This has been quoted on this site before but it is worth posting again with another head slap...

"When the guys in R&D were working on the Samsung Auto Shot feature, they recorded live 28 megapixel, 240 fps "video" to help with the debugging. We didn't see there being an application for that, at least for very, very few people."

Well hopefully I will turn out to be wrong but unless they purposely crippled the camera it's looking as though he was talking a load of bull'.

I don't buy it either. That's a lot of data to get out of the sensor, no way they are doing it at 240 fps on a sensor that's not specifically designed for the task of recording high-res, high-fps video.

I think the inference is that there was enough processing power to do so ... in a lab. The "real time" use requires accommodations for heat buildup, etc.

FWIW, A7s was supposedly capable of internal 4K too but only for a few minutes due to the same heat buildup and Sony decided to nix the idea for the time being.

PS. That HITrecord/JGL videos are a bewildering approach for Samsung. The "gritty" look may be OK after you have sold a ton of products but not before.

More info is trickling out on NX1 --

The 4k videos are outsanding. Possibly better than OOC JPG as to color rendition. This seems a camerar for videographers more than for photographers...

In an initial assessment of the image quality, the low to mid-range ISO shots look very good with lots of crisp, fine detail and resolution, plus very minimal noise at ISO 1600-3200.

QUOTE=billh;1986493542]Here is a new report with info on video that is interesting. http://cameras.reviewed.com/content/samsung-nx1-digital-camera-review
Really interesting, thanks for sharing!
If that is true we have an absolute winner here...:" In video, the NX1 separates itself from everybody except the Panasonic GH4 when it's at its best. The 4K video resolved more fine detail than even the GH4. In low light the NX1 can record usably bright video with just two lux of light, as well, with very little visible noise through ISO 3200."

There is a long thread here by a user with the NX1 in hand, http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54742428
The person posting (“Usee”) has posted a link to a straight from the camera h265 video files (if you want to read his currect posts - after he received the camera, look at those posted 1 day ago),

There are many posts, but this one may help anyone interested in viewing the clip,
My computer can play it with PowerDirector 13 without problems, and with VLC 2.1.5. also.

Thanks DLD for the link. Very impressive indeed. I don't think is just playing around with this camera. I am pretty sure they are very eager to give the Japanese camera companies a run for their money. Can't wait to see more video and still. In the meantime I am saving my pennies. Maybe a new toy for Christmas day!

Rumor: Samsung NX1 price drop coming in January due to lower than expected preorders.

Unless a Samsung camera is head and shoulders - and chest and waist and knees and ankles - above everyone else, I predict big failure for Samsung sales-wise. The market size for DSLR cameras with outstanding video capabilities to the pro or semi-pro level is not infinite - it's a limited market. And most people have made their choices. The big winner (by numbers) appears to be Canon, with Sony somewhere far in the distance, and Panasonic mopping up the crumbs. People have bought their lenses and adapters. They'll stay with what they have - be it Canon, or Sony or Panasonic (maybe throw in a few Nikon freaks). It's done. How excited are people going to be to switch to yet another system and mount and start buying native lenses, if the camera is just a tiny bit better, and with no guarantee that the next Sony or Panasonic is not going to take a leap forward anyway? Right now we have the GH4 and the A7s - both have their strong and weak points, but people fully expect that GH5 and A8S (or whatever) will be a big leap forward, so why buy the NX1 now? I mean, sure there are always the bleeding edge early adopters who will buy anything that's a whisker better in some way, but that's not the majority of the market. Look what a hard time Sony and Panasonic are having in the DSLR video space trying to compete against the incumbent Canon - the numbers tell the story. Most of the people stick with Canon. That's the market. A few crumbs are left for Sony and Panasonic (and at least Nikon has a ton of people who already own Nikon lenses). What's left for Samsung? I mean unless the NX1 is something that's just totally 100% irresistibly VASTLY superior to the GH4 and A7s, why go for the NX1 and buy lenses? Buying native lenses means committing to a company and their roadmap - do we really believe Samsung is going to come out with camera after camera after camera that's just beating the pants off of everyone else? I kinda doubt it. So that means, we'll stay with the lenses and systems we already have. Samsung is not going to succeed in this space IMHO.

The GH4 ate up most of the 4K mirrorless pie so Samsung had to settle for what demand was out there for a 4K mirrorless before Sony comes out with internal 4K E mount mirrorless cameras.

They will do just fine. They have deep pockets and a big footprint in digital technology. We will wait a little longer and will see the results on the NX1. As for lenses in this day and age it is extremely foolish to build a big lens collection. Samsung has a fine line of lenses and you can also use Nikon or Canon manual lenses with an adapter the same way you do with the GH4. And this camera is not aimed exclusively to videographers. The stills that I saw at Photo Plus in NYC looked pretty good to me. Just with the photo side of the camera I will recoup my investment right back.

The interchangeable lens DSLR market is about 15 million units shipped annually. Panasonic GH4 sells about 5,000 units monthly. Canon doesn't have a single 4K camera under $10,000 (1D C and C500). Sony doesn't have a single internal 4K DSLR/DSLM camera yet either. (FS-700 sold about 500 units monthly) Nor do Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, Ricoh/Pentax.

According to a recent article at NoFilmSchool, there are 16 smartphone models that do 4K.

And NX1 sales - shhhhh - will probably go through the roof once a few competent video reviews are out.

In case anybody has doubts about Samsung commitment to cameras. They are going to sell plenty of NX 1s and many other of their cameras as well.
