GH4 4k recorder for GH4

Can anyone recommend a good 4K external recorder/monitor that will work with the GH4? I'm interested in the Convergent Designs 7Q + OLED.
And do I need the YAGH Interface Unit in order to record 4K to an external device, or can I just use a mini-HDMI cable?
Thanks,
Andrew

HDMi will work with Q7 (and there are basically usual suspects - Q7 and Shogun, with other companies soon to follow). YAGH will get you 4K to AJA Ki Pro Quad.

Just for clarity, the no-longer-manufactured Odyssey7Q would require the YAGH but the currently-produced Odyssey7Q+ can accept 4K directly from the GH4's HDMI output.

Yes, I'm aware of this. The original poster did not state if they wanted to purchase the recorder immediately.

Given that B&H is taking pre-orders, I would expect these to start shipping by this Summer.
Dealers often take pre-orders on products many months in advance. Ours included. One of our competitors started taking pre-orders from dealers as soon as their product was announced at NAB and announced to ship in August. That product did not actually ship until the last week of December.

Not calling out anyone, as it happens with many companies. Just noting that people need to be clear if a product is or is not available. From the way the OP phrased the post, I would take it that the person is not that knowledgable about the products available in this category and their histories.

Anyway, as of today there are two products that can record the 4K HDMI output from the GH4.

In addition to being a recorder the 7Q+ is a great monitor too.

Numbers of DPs & ACs bought them purely as monitors with no intention of utilizing the recording features.

If you are going to get Odyssey, test it first. I tried to get one to work with my GH4 without preparation, and it was no fun. Mitch has instructions he can post.
The resulting system may not be as robust as you wish - if the link is interrupted you may need to reinit evertything. You really need to test.
I think the same caution applies to Shogun and Sound Devices.

Piggybacking on this thread ...

What if I only need a recorder that can handle full HD & 60fps? Also wanting APR 422 & 10 bit. I assume there's more out there than just the Shogun & Odyssey7Q?

Thanks.

Actually, no. I believe that those are the only units currently available that will also record 1080p60 from an HDMI source.

Thanks Mitch. Is frame rate an actual factor/limitation in these things? Like, if a recorder can handle full HD @ 24 or 30fps, that doesn't necessarily mean it can handle 60fps ... or in the case of the GH4, 96fps? Or the Sony A7S shooting 720p @ 120fps?

Frame rate equals data load. 1080 at 60p is twice as much data as 1080 at 30p. The HDMI input receiver chip on all but those two recorders is hardware-limited to a maximum of 1080p30 (same as 1080i60).
