4K phone vs 5D mkII, 7D. :)

The wife got herself a new phone after smashing her old one. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Now I know it has "4k" ( 3840 x 2160 ) video so I figured, why not see how my 5DmkII and 7D HDSLRs compare in terms of resolution, color aliasing, and moire on an ol' HD resolution chart. -its also a good excuse to give her a break from being stuck on facebook all night long.

Taped it to my ballhead and lets get a looksee..teehee..

Hey Ted. Yep MLV sound has worked well for me as well :)

i'm dying to know what their "little sensor upgrade" is

Looks darn good, the galaxy.
No moire and aliasing for instance. Pretty sharp too.
Am I the only one seeing this?

I can't see the files at full res, but I already knew that phone makes some pretty detailed 4K video. It should be a lot sharper and with less artifacts than what we get from the 5D2, even in RAW video mode. Then again, it should have very limited DR.

I can't, shes browsing facebook all the time! :D

But Philip bloom took it out for a spin.

He raised those black levels giving that fake wide latitude look. Not a sin, I still feel like it is cheating, haha, ala VSCO CAM. It actually seems to work well with our current display technology. Using the full contrast of a screen can look burnt. This allows the perception of rich contrast while resting in a sweet spot. Also, our brains get to imagine shadow detail that isn't really there.

It's pretty sad that a phone has better resolution than our 3000 dollar cameras. DAMN IT
Consumer buying power.

Change for high end has to happen with the consumer. Otherwise prices and features will be somewhat out of sync with technological capabilities.

@Steve,

Off Topic. Checking on devs in ML, I believe they're getting closer to fixing FPN and increased "clean" DR. That is my understanding.

I'm stoked as well but I won't swerve this thread too much OT so lets continue our talk over the thread. I'm going to post my tests on the latest MLVs there.
